Sweet Neapolitan Crochet Shawl
What is Being Made
Sweet Neapolitan is a crocheted shawl designed by Ana Morais Soares. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a lightweight, elegant shawl measuring approximately 30 cm x 180 cm (12 inches x 71 inches), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering during spring and summer seasons.
Craft and Construction Technique
This project uses the crochet technique to construct an intricate shawl featuring decorative petal motifs. The design incorporates a structured approach using treble crochet stitches as the foundation, combined with decorative elements that create visual interest throughout the piece. The pattern involves working in rounds with strategic yarn overs and stitch clusters to build the dimensional petal details that define the shawl's aesthetic.
Stitches Used
The Sweet Neapolitan shawl employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and spacing
- Slip stitch (sl st) – for joining and securing
- Single crochet (sc) – basic stitch for structure
- Half double crochet (hdc) – intermediate stitch for texture
- Double crochet (dc) – core stitch for body
- Treble crochet (tr) – primary stitch creating the main fabric
- V treble stitch (VTrst) – decorative stitch combining treble crochet with chain spacing (tr + ch 5 + tr)
- Picot – decorative edging element created with chain 5 and slip stitch through the top of the stitch below
- 3 treble crochet cluster (3tr-CL) – advanced stitch technique using yarn overs and hook insertions to create clustered texture
Materials and Tools
The Sweet Neapolitan shawl is crafted using premium natural materials. The yarn is Rosários 4 Madragoa, a 100% natural silk yarn in 4-ply weight, offering a luxurious drape and refined finish suitable for spring and summer wear. The pattern requires 4 balls total of yarn (50g/200m per ball), distributed across three coordinating colors: 2 balls in pink (color 03), 1 ball in vanilla (color 01), and 1 ball in caramel (color 05). These warm, complementary tones create the "Neapolitan" ice cream-inspired color palette.
Construction requires a 2.5mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with more complex stitch combinations and cluster techniques. The pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow multi-step instructions involving yarn overs and stitch closures.
