Product Description

Sweet Home Kentucky is the first of three hats named for my friend Rhonnie. I had been working on a hat combining garter/broken rib and an offset cable for some time, but it wasn't working out. I had put it aside and (mostly) forgotten about it. When Rhonnie came to visit, she found an early prototype and insisted I finish writing it. As a result, the three hats I refer to as "The Rhonnie Collection" were finished.

Sweet Home Kentucky is available in three sizes and is worked in the round. Skills required include knits, purls, cables (3x3) and decreases (k2tog, ssk, and cdd).

Sweet Home Kentucky Hat by Allison Janocha

What is Being Made

Sweet Home Kentucky is a knitted hat pattern available in three sizes: Infant/small child (16" circumference), Large child/small adult (19.25" circumference), and Large adult (22.5" circumference). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished hat suitable for various age groups and head sizes.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This hat is constructed using the knit-in-the-round method, a fundamental technique for creating seamless circular garments. The pattern accommodates multiple approaches to working small circumferences, offering flexibility based on knitter preference and available tools. Knitters may choose between 16-inch circular needles, Magic Loop (a technique using a long circular needle), or double-pointed needles (dpns). The pattern notes that if using a 16-inch circular needle, knitters will need to transition to dpns or Magic Loop when shaping the crown, as the decreases reduce the stitch count below what the circular needle can comfortably accommodate.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is 3x1 garter rib, which combines garter stitch (knit every row) with ribbed sections. This textured stitch pattern creates visual interest and elasticity in the finished hat. The gauge for this pattern is 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in 3x1 garter rib, making accurate gauge swatching essential for proper fit across all three size options.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Worsted weight wool or wool blend, with yardage requirements varying by size: 100 yards (90 m) for Infant/small child, 150 yards (135 m) for Large child/small adult, and 200 yards (180 m) for Large adult. The sample shown was knitted in Madelinetosh Vintage, a 100% superwash merino yarn.
  • Needles: US Size 4 and US Size 6 (3.5 mm and 4.0 mm) needles in your preferred method for knitting small circumferences in the round, such as 16-inch circular needles, Magic Loop, or double-pointed needles. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to obtain the specified gauge.
  • Notions: Cable needle for cable or textured stitch work, two stitch markers (additional markers optional for pattern tracking), and blocking supplies for finishing.
  • Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.

Pattern Details

This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Allison Janocha includes comprehensive instructions for creating a classic knitted hat. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques, working in the round, and following written pattern instructions. The pattern provides clear guidance on needle transitions and size adjustments, making it accessible for knitters seeking to customize the fit for different recipients.
