Product Description

The design Suvi (Estonian for “summer”) is inspired by the beautiful traditional Estonian stitch patterns.

The tee is worked seamlessly in rounds in one piece from the top-down using elements of the contiguous method. Additional body increases are worked in the upper body to improve the fit. The stranded section is framed by Latvian braids. The pattern provides optional bust darts for those of you who are on the busty side.

After the sleeves are divided, the lower body is continued with pleats in the middle of front and back, and then it is worked straight down.

GAUGE 10x10 cm/4”x4”: 26 sts x 36 r (with larger needle)

YARDAGE 800 - 1450 m/875 - 1590 yd (main colour) 160 - 300 m/ 175 – 330 yd (contrast colour)

Suvi Summer Top by Frl. Staedtisch

What is Being Made

Suvi is a seamless knitted top that combines traditional Estonian stitch patterns with a light, summery aesthetic. The name "Suvi" means "summer" in Estonian, reflecting the garment's seasonal design. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked from the top down in the round, creating a fitted pullover with optional shaping features for different body types.

Construction Technique

The Suvi top employs the top-down seamless construction method, worked entirely in rounds using circular needles. The design incorporates elements of the Contiguous method, a technique that allows for smooth transitions between pattern sections without breaking yarn or creating visible seams.

The yoke begins with the main stitch pattern, which is framed by a Latvian border—a decorative edging technique that adds visual interest and structural definition. The upper body includes strategic increases positioned to optimize the fit and silhouette of the shirt. For wearers with a fuller bust, the pattern provides optional bust darts, allowing for customized shaping that improves comfort and garment drape.

After the sleeves are separated from the body, decorative ruching (gathered folds) is worked into the center of both the front and back panels, adding textural detail and visual interest. The body is then knitted straight down to the desired length.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Suvi top features Estonian stitch patterns as its primary design element. These traditional colorwork and textured stitches are worked seamlessly into the yoke and upper body. The patterns are complemented by a Latvian border, incorporating techniques from Baltic knitting traditions. Ruching techniques create gathered texture in the body sections.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn Weight: Fingering weight (4-ply) yarn is recommended to achieve the proper drape and stitch definition required for this pattern.

Yarn Quantity:

  • Main color: 800–1,450 meters
  • Contrast color: 160–300 meters

Tools and Notions:

  • Circular needles in 3 mm and 2.5 mm sizes (needle size may be adjusted to achieve the correct gauge)
  • 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

Gauge (measured over 10 x 10 cm with the larger needle): 26 stitches × 36 rows. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in a fitted top with shaping elements.
