Product Description
This is Susie. She is a laid back little monster that likes to live life in the slow lane. She usually chills out in people’s gardens, where she feeds off the leaves, fruit and small insects. Her sharp pointy teeth might make her look fierce, but she wouldn’t hurt a fly (well OK, maybe a fly). Her arms and legs are so little that they aren’t much use, so she usually scoots around leisurely on her belly. Being so slow, she relies on her camouflage amongst the trees and bushes. This makes Susie a very hard girl to spot indeed!
Must know how to: • Single Crochet (US) / Double Crochet (UK) • Use ‘Magic circle’ method for crochet in the round (stitch multiple stitches within one loop and pull tight to form a circle) • Increase • Decrease • Slip stitch • Chain stitches • only suitable for English speakers
Susie the Monster: A Beginner-Friendly Crochet Amigurumi Toy
What Is Being Made
Susie the Monster is a charming crocheted stuffed toy designed by Zoe Garland. This whimsical creature is a laid-back little monster character with a playful personality. According to the pattern narrative, Susie is a slow-moving garden dweller who feeds on leaves, fruit, and small insects. Despite her fierce appearance with sharp pointy teeth, she is a gentle character who would not harm a fly. Her distinctive features include tiny, stubby arms and legs that are too small to be functional, so she scoots around leisurely on her belly. Her natural camouflage coloring helps her blend in amongst trees and bushes, making her a challenging character to spot in a garden setting.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Susie the Monster is classified as an amigurumi toy—a Japanese crochet technique for creating three-dimensional stuffed animals and creatures. The pattern is designed for beginner-level crocheters, making it an excellent introduction to amigurumi construction for those new to the craft. The stuffed toy construction requires basic shaping and assembly skills typical of beginner amigurumi projects.
Stitches and Construction
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names, amigurumi projects of this type typically employ fundamental crochet stitches. Beginners working with this pattern can expect to use basic stitches commonly found in starter-level amigurumi designs. The construction involves crocheting individual body parts—such as the body, head, arms, legs, and teeth—which are then assembled together to form the complete monster character.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Susie the Monster is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that provides good stitch definition and is manageable for beginners. The pattern requires an appropriate crochet hook sized for DK yarn, along with fiberfill stuffing to create the three-dimensional stuffed toy effect. Yarn in colors suitable for creating the monster's body, teeth, and facial features will be needed to bring Susie to life.
