Product Description

Uniquely designed to be rolled into two different types of sushi for show-shopping gift presentation, subtle main colours and appealing texture variations make these bulky mittens easy to wear every day. The fold-back cuffs cover wrist-hugging ribbing for extra warmth. Entertain yourself while wearing the mittens by making sushi! Just form a fist with your thumb in the centre, or clasp both hands together.

Sized for an 8" (20 cm) palm circumference (women's M-L or men's S).

You will need three main colours of wool: white, black, and red (or colour of your choice for cuff; pattern photo shows mitten cuffs in a discontinued colour). You'll use about half of each skein to make one pair.

***For the mittens’ thumb, you will also need very small amounts of a similar-weight wool in three contrasting colours (in mittens pictured, rather than using scraps of super bulky wool, I have used a double strand of scraps of aran-weight wool in red, yellow and green).

I recommend using the invisible seaming/mattress stitch method for the neatest and most professional finish when you are joining the fronts and backs of the mittens!

Sushi Mittens by Amy Anderson

What is Being Made

The Sushi Mittens are a pair of whimsical, playful knitted mittens designed with a unique dual-purpose concept. These mittens are intentionally constructed to be rolled into two different types of sushi for creative gift presentation and entertainment. Sized for an 8" palm circumference, they fit women's medium-large or men's small sizes, though the stitch count can be easily adjusted for custom sizing. The mittens feature fold-back cuffs that cover wrist-hugging ribbing for enhanced warmth and comfort during cold weather wear.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs fundamental techniques suitable for beginners. The mittens are worked in the round using a set of double-pointed needles, a classic method for creating seamless, tubular garments. The construction includes ribbed cuffs at the wrist, which provide elasticity and a snug fit. The fold-back cuff design adds both functional warmth and visual interest. The mittens are designed with subtle main colors and appealing texture variations that make them suitable for everyday wear while maintaining their playful sushi-themed presentation concept.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing stitches for the cuff construction, providing stretch and wrist coverage
  • Stockinette stitch or similar foundational stitches for the main mitten body
  • Texture variations incorporated throughout the design to enhance visual appeal

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Berrocco Peruvia Quick, classified as Super Bulky weight (5-6 wpi). Approximately half a skein is needed in each of three colors, allowing for creative color blocking and the distinctive sushi-themed appearance.

Needles: US 10.5 (6.0 mm) double-pointed needles in a set of 4, appropriate for working in the round with chunky yarn.

Gauge: 16 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches, which is typical for super bulky yarn and contributes to the quick knitting pace of this beginner-friendly project.
