Product Description

Tapestry Crochet Sunglasses Case

This crochet sunglasses case is one cool dude! It is created using the ‘tapestry crochet’ technique, and is a great starter project if you haven’t attempted crochet colorwork before. The pattern includes full written instructions, as well as a colorwork chart.

It also includes a full photo tutorial on how to attach a fabric liner and zipper to the clutch. And don’t worry, it requires only very basic sewing skills.

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK for my sunglasses case. I love 100% cotton or a cotton blend for a purse or clutch, as it is super durable, and gives good weight and structure for everyday use.

Although I used #3/DK weight yarn for my clutch, the pattern will work just as well with a #4/worsted yarn – your finished piece will just end up a little larger than mine of course :-)

Sunglasses Case with Zipper Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern for a structured sunglasses case designed by Sarah Ruane. The finished case measures approximately 7.5 inches wide by 4.25 inches tall, providing a compact protective pouch for eyewear. The case features a functional zipper closure, making it practical for storing and transporting sunglasses while maintaining their shape and protecting lenses from damage.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The sunglasses case is constructed using single crochet stitches worked in the back loop only (sc blo), which creates a dense, textured fabric ideal for a structured accessory. The pattern employs color work with carried yarn, incorporating two contrasting colors throughout the design. The designer emphasizes the importance of achieving tight, consistent stitches to prevent the carried yarn from showing through the fabric, which is critical for both the aesthetic appearance and structural integrity of the finished case.

The construction is worked in the round, allowing for seamless shaping and a polished finished product. The zipper is integrated into the design as a functional closure element, requiring careful placement and attachment during assembly.

Stitches Used

  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch throughout the pattern
  • Single crochet in back loop only (sc blo) – creates the main fabric with textured appearance
  • Color work with yarn carrying – technique for incorporating the contrast color

Materials and Gauge

This pattern uses DK weight yarn in two colors: Vanilla Cream (main color requiring approximately 80 yards) and Vintage Pink (contrast color requiring approximately 20 yards). Both colors require less than one full skein, making this an excellent project for using yarn scraps or stash busting.

The recommended hook size is 3.75mm/F-5. The designer notes that achieving the proper gauge is essential for this project, with a target gauge of 19 stitches by 18 rows over 4 inches (10cm x 10cm) measured in single crochet back loop only worked in the round. Crocheters who typically work with a loose tension may need to use a smaller hook size than usual to achieve sufficiently tight stitches that prevent the carried yarn from being visible through the fabric.

Additional materials needed include an 8-inch zipper, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembling the zipper closure.

Pattern Notes

The designer recommends reading through the entire pattern before beginning work. This is particularly important given the color work and zipper integration elements. The pattern is classified as beginner level, making it accessible to newer crocheters while still offering the opportunity to practice important techniques like working in the round, maintaining consistent gauge, and managing color changes.
