What is Being Made
The Sunflower Cowl Scarf is a crocheted cowl-style scarf featuring dimensional sunflower motifs. This intermediate-level crochet project combines a wearable cowl construction with decorative floral elements, creating a statement accessory that blends functional neckwear with artistic fiber art design.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed exclusively for crochet, utilizing fundamental crochet construction methods to build both the main scarf body and the decorative sunflower motifs. The design demonstrates intermediate-level crochet skills, making it suitable for crafters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex projects involving multiple color changes and motif assembly.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs standard crochet stitches to construct the sunflower motifs in the round, building dimensional flower centers and petals. The sunflower motifs are worked as separate components that measure 11" x 11" (28 cm x 28 cm) when completed, with the flower centers developing from 3" (7.5 cm) diameter through the first three rounds and expanding to 6" (15 cm) diameter by round five. These motifs are then incorporated into the cowl scarf structure, demonstrating techniques for seamlessly integrating decorative elements into wearable garments.
Yarn and Materials
The Sunflower Cowl Scarf accommodates multiple yarn weight options and colorway variations:
- Main Scarf Version: 250 yards brown worsted weight, 100 yards green worsted weight, 75 yards gold worsted weight, and 50 yards yellow worsted weight. Recommended yarns include Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Marled Forest and Desert Dust, Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn Sungold, and Caron Simply Soft in Sunshine
- Pink Version: Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Pink and Lion Brand Just My Stripe in Cotton Candy
- DK Weight Version: 246 yards grey acrylic DK yarn with 3 yards each of yellow and green acrylic DK, using Budgetyarn brand
Crochet Hooks and Gauge
The pattern requires an I-9 or 5.5 mm crochet hook for the worsted weight versions. The DK weight variation uses a 4.0 mm crochet hook. Gauge measurements are provided for accurate sizing: the sunflower center measures 3" (7.5 cm) in diameter after completing rounds 1-3, and 6" (15 cm) in diameter after round 5. For the DK version, the sunflower center measures 2.5" (6 cm) in diameter after rounds 1-3, reflecting the finer yarn weight.
Design Flexibility
This pattern offers crafters flexibility in yarn selection and weight options. The availability of worsted weight and DK weight versions allows makers to choose based on desired finished dimensions, yarn availability, and personal preference. Multiple colorway options—including the earthy main version, the softer pink variation, and the economical grey DK option—enable customization while maintaining the signature sunflower design aesthetic.
