What you'll need

Product Description

*SUMMER ROSE* this is for the knitting pattern pdf ONLY. Probably for the intermediate knitter although there are only 2 rows that would challenge an advanced beginner. I have used 300gms of baby soft double knit yarn on 5mm straight knitting needles. A very pretty blanket in pink but I have also made it in white and it looks very different. It is made by knitting the centre square first and then the sides are knitted by picking up stitches from each side. The sides are then stitched together. A lovely, personal gift for a new baby that can be cherished for years to come. The finished size is approx: 32x32ins/82x82cms. This is for the pdf only and not the finished article and please, please do not ask me for a paper, posted pattern as the answer will always be no.

*SUMMER ROSE* Baby Blanket

What is Being Made

The *SUMMER ROSE* is a knitted baby blanket measuring approximately 32x32 inches (82x82 centimeters). This intermediate-level knitting project by designer SUSAN J WARD features a distinctive construction method where a central square is created first, then the surrounding sides are worked by picking up stitches from each edge of the center square one side at a time.

Construction Technique

This blanket employs a modular construction approach that simplifies the creation of a large square blanket. Rather than knitting the entire piece in one continuous section, the pattern divides the work into manageable segments. The knitter begins by completing a center square measuring approximately 26x26 centimeters, which requires approximately 62 rows of knitting. Once the center square is finished, stitches are picked up from each of the four sides sequentially and worked outward to create the blanket's borders. This technique allows for even expansion and helps prevent distortion that can occur when knitting very large pieces in a single direction.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The pattern utilizes several fundamental and decorative knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit stitch (K) – the basic foundation stitch
  • Purl stitch (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural variation
  • Yarn over (Yon) – creates decorative eyelet holes and increases stitches
  • Yarn forward (Yfd) – moves yarn to the front of the work to create openwork effects
  • Yarn round needle (Yrn) – worked at the start of every row as part of the pattern sequence
  • Wrap yarn twice round needle (WYTRN) – an advanced technique where yarn is wrapped around the needle twice to create elongated stitches
  • Unwrap technique – the wrapped stitches from the previous row are unwrapped to create one large loop and then transferred back to the left needle to be purled together
  • Stitches together (Tog) – used to decrease stitches and shape the fabric

The center square pattern repeats two rows continuously until the desired square size is achieved. The pattern row begins with K1, followed by a repeat of yarn forward, knit 2 stitches, then lifting the yarn forward over the 2 stitches and off the needle. This sequence is repeated across the row until the final stitch, which is knitted. The second row consists of K1, then purling to the end. These two rows form the basis of the repeating pattern.

Materials and Tools

The *SUMMER ROSE* baby blanket requires the following materials and equipment:

  • Yarn: 300 grams of baby soft double knit yarn – a soft, durable weight appropriate for delicate baby items
  • Primary needles: 1 pair of 5mm knitting needles used for the main body of the blanket
  • Finishing needle: 1 single 6mm knitting needle designated specifically for casting off, which helps create a neat, elastic finished edge

This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer SUSAN J WARD provides an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with foundational knitting skills who are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns and construction methods.
