Stylish Belted Tote by Frugal Knitting Haus

What is Being Made

The Stylish Belted Tote is a knitted bag designed as a practical and fashionable accessory. The finished tote measures approximately 11½ inches high and 12½ inches wide (excluding the bow and handle), making it a medium-sized bag suitable for everyday use or special occasions. The design features a decorative belted element with a knotted bow detail that adds visual interest and style to the finished piece.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential knitting techniques to create its structure and visual appeal. The pattern begins with casting on stitches at the bottom of the bag and works upward in rows. A key technique featured in the design is the slip stitch, which creates texture and visual interest throughout the body of the tote. The pattern uses a repeating slip stitch motif that alternates with knit stitches to produce the characteristic patterned appearance of the bag. Decreasing stitches at the top of the bag helps shape the opening and is accomplished using knit two together (k2tog) decreases. The bow is created as a separate component and is secured to the finished bag using a safety pin placed on the inside, allowing for flexibility in styling.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K) - Forms the foundation of the fabric and appears throughout the pattern
  • Purl stitch (P) - Used in alternating rows to create texture and structure
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - Slipped as if to knit, this stitch creates the decorative pattern repeat across the bag body
  • Knit two together (k2tog) - Used for decreasing stitches at the top of the bag to shape the opening
  • Cast on - Creates the initial 120 stitches at the bottom of the bag

Pattern Stitch Details

The main pattern stitch alternates between two rows. Row 1 is purled across the entire row. Row 2 establishes the slip stitch pattern: knit 2 stitches, then slip the next stitch as if to knit, followed by a repeat of knit 4 stitches and slip 1 stitch across the row, ending with knit 2. This two-row pattern repeat continues until the bag reaches approximately 11½ inches in height, ending on a purl row. The top shaping row uses all knit stitches with decreases worked as knit 3, knit 2 together, repeated across the row to reduce the stitch count and shape the bag opening.

Materials Required

The Stylish Belted Tote is designed to be an economical project, requiring minimal yardage. For the main bag body, you will need 1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver in a 5-ounce size in any variegated color of your choice. The pattern example was created using the variegated color Icelandic. An additional plain color yarn of approximately 80 yards is needed for the bow and tie detail; the pattern example used leftover turquoise yarn for this component. Two sets of US knitting needles are required: size #8 and size #10, allowing you to adjust needle size if needed to achieve proper gauge. A yarn sewing needle is essential for finishing and seaming the bag, and a large safety pin is used on the inside of the finished bag to securely hold the knotted bow in place.

Yarn Weight and Gauge

This project uses worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits up quickly and creates a sturdy, durable fabric ideal for a functional tote bag. The recommended gauge is approximately 9 stitches and 2 inches in width, and 7 rows to 1 inch in height, measured over the pattern stitch used on the bag body. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the finished dimensions specified in the pattern.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to work with pattern stitches and shaping. The combination of slip stitches, alternating knit and purl rows, and decreasing techniques provides good practice for developing intermediate knitting skills while still remaining approachable for experienced beginners.
