Product Description
Stella is a semi-circular shawl with a modular-knit border. Most of it is simple garter. The star band is worked first, and then the rest of the shawl is knit-on from picked up stitches.
You need to be familiar with short rows, in-the-round knitting, and decreases&increases.
Gauge: With fingering-weight yarn and 3mm needles, one star measures 12-13cm across. Preblocked, the shawl wass 160 X 60cm. After blocking it stretched to 180 X 70cm. The garter gauge was approx 22sts by 28rows unstretched, preblocked. It stretched to almost 20X20 in 10cm after blocking.
Stella Shawl by Kulabra Designs
What is Being Made
Stella is an intermediate-level knitted shawl featuring a distinctive star motif design. The shawl showcases 14 stars arranged along the outer edge in the prototype version, with the option to expand the design by adding additional stars for a larger finished piece. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a triangular or crescent-shaped shawl suitable for layering and everyday wear.
Design and Construction Technique
The shawl employs a modular construction approach, combining individual star elements with diamond-shaped sections positioned between them. This technique allows for customization of the final shawl size by adjusting the number of stars incorporated into the design. The pattern uses two different needle sizes during construction to accommodate the varying stitch densities required for different sections of the shawl.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern utilizes garter stitch as a foundational element, with an approximate gauge of 22 stitches by 28 rows when worked unstretched on 3mm needles with fingering-weight yarn. The star and diamond motifs are created through increases and decreases that form the geometric shapes characteristic of the design. The interplay between the solid-colored sections and self-striping yarn creates visual interest and definition within the overall pattern structure.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Stella is designed to work with approximately 300 grams (1200 meters) of fingering-weight yarn total. The prototype was knit using a three-color combination: grey, orange, and self-striping yarn. The pattern is engineered to use no more than 1 skein (400 meters) of each solid color, with 1 skein of self-striping fingering-weight yarn (such as Vesper sock 2-ply merino) sufficient for 16 to 17 stars. Expanding the shawl beyond the prototype size may require up to 20 percent additional yardage of the solid colors.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two sets of circular needles in different sizes: 3mm needles with a short wire for working the stars and diamond sections, and 3.5mm needles with a longer wire for constructing the remaining portions of the shawl. A tapestry needle is necessary for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Finished Dimensions and Blocking
Before blocking, the prototype shawl measured 160 centimeters by 60 centimeters. After wet blocking, the finished shawl stretched to 180 centimeters by 70 centimeters, demonstrating the significant growth typical of lace and openwork knit shawls. Individual stars measure approximately 12 to 13 centimeters across when worked with fingering-weight yarn on 3mm needles.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
Stella is classified as an intermediate-level knitting pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple colors, manage stitch counts across different needle sizes, and execute geometric shaping. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to instructions for digital reference or printing.
