Product Description

Steff Child Tunic

The herringbone half double crochet is one of my favorite stitches to use to get a lot of texture quickly. This Tunic pattern is fitted through the chest and flares out slightly from there giving a fun shape and classic design!

This pattern is also available in Infant Sizes 3mo-24mo.

What is Being Made

The Steff Child Tunic is a beginner-friendly crochet garment designed for children in sizes 2 through 10. This tunic features a classic pullover construction with button details and is suitable for young children ranging from approximately 21 inches to 30 inches in chest measurement. The tunic lengths vary by size, ranging from 15 inches for the smallest size to 21 inches for size 10, providing appropriate proportions for each age group.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to beginners while creating a polished finished garment. The tunic is constructed using a straightforward body piece approach, beginning with a foundation row that establishes the base width of the garment. The design incorporates strategic shaping through increases and decreases to create a flattering silhouette suitable for children's wear.

The pattern utilizes herringbone half double crochet as a signature stitch, which creates a textured, visually interesting fabric with excellent drape and structure. This specialty stitch adds dimension to the garment while remaining manageable for beginner crocheters. The herringbone half double crochet technique is explained in detail within the pattern's special stitches section, ensuring crafters understand the proper execution before beginning the main project.

Stitches Used

  • Foundation single crochet (fsc): Creates the initial chain base with integrated single crochet stitches for a stable, professional starting edge
  • Herringbone half double crochet (hhdc): The primary stitch throughout the tunic, creating texture and structure
  • Herringbone half double crochet two together (hhdc2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping the garment
  • Single crochet (sc): Used for finishing edges and details
  • Half double crochet (hdc): Employed in construction and shaping sections
  • Chain (ch): Used for turning chains and spacing throughout the pattern
  • Slip stitch (slst): Utilized for joining rounds and finishing

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Steff Child Tunic requires 340 to 600 yards of worsted weight yarn (Aran #4), with yardage varying by child's size. The sample garment was created using Caron Cakes, a popular variegated yarn option that adds visual interest to the finished tunic. The pattern has been successfully tested with alternative yarns including Lion Brand Vanna's Choice and Loops and Threads Impeccable, providing crafters with multiple yarn options to suit their preferences and budget.

Construction requires a J hook (6.0 mm) to achieve proper gauge with the specified yarn weight. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, a measuring tape for checking sizing and gauge, and five buttons measuring 0.75 inches for the button closures that add both functional and decorative elements to the finished tunic.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern accommodates five different child sizes with specific chest measurements and length specifications. Each size includes 2 inches of ease for comfortable wear. Size 2 features a 23-inch finished chest and 15-inch length, while size 10 offers a 30-inch finished chest and 21-inch length. This range ensures the tunic can be customized to fit children at various stages of development.

Difficulty Level

Designed as a beginner project, the Steff Child Tunic introduces crocheters to fundamental techniques and garment construction without overwhelming complexity. The straightforward pattern instructions and use of basic stitches make this an excellent choice for those new to garment crochet, while the specialty herringbone half double crochet stitch provides an opportunity to expand technical skills within a manageable scope.
