What Is Being Made

The Square Tassel Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted hat design available in six sizes, ranging from newborn (35 cm / 13.75 inches head circumference) through to child (54 cm / 21.25 inches). This downloadable knitting pattern produces a classic hat silhouette finished with a distinctive handmade twisted cord tassel, making it suitable for babies, toddlers, and young children.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The construction involves casting on stitches, working in the round or flat depending on the chosen variation, and executing basic shaping through increases and decreases. A key finishing technique featured in this design is the creation of a twisted cord tassel, which adds visual interest and texture to the completed hat. The tassel-making process involves twisting yarn strands together tightly by hand, folding the twisted cord in half to allow it to coil naturally, and securing it with knots before unraveling the end to create the tassel fringe.

Stitches Used

The pattern includes two distinct stitch variations. The Ribbed Hat utilizes ribbed knit stitches, which create vertical columns of texture that provide elasticity and a fitted appearance. The Moss Stitch Hat employs moss stitch (also known as seed stitch), a textured stitch pattern created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard formation, resulting in a bumpy, tweedy fabric surface.

Materials Required

This pattern calls for Touch Yarns Merino 8ply/DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating garments with good drape and definition. Two colorway options are specified:

• Shade #824 for the Ribbed Hat variation
• Shade #826 for the Moss Stitch Hat variation

Each yarn ball contains 100 meters per 50 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size: newborn and 1-year sizes require 1 ball (50g / 2 oz), 2-year sizes require 2 balls (100g / 3 oz), and 4-year and child sizes require 2–3 balls depending on the specific size. Knitting needles required include 4mm/US 6 needles for the main fabric and 3.25mm/US 3 needles for ribbed edging, with the pattern specifying a 1-pair needle requirement.

Finishing

The completed hat requires seaming the side seam and attaching both twisted cord tassels. Blocking or pressing according to yarn manufacturer instructions is recommended to set the stitches and achieve the intended finished dimensions.
