Product Description

Spring often seems to bide its time before its arrival, starting slowly with just a hint of warmth and sunshine, and a few wee buds that appear before the trees and hedges completely burst out in a sea of colour. These mitts are just the same – offering just a hint of cables and bobbles in the shape of a floral motif, against a background of ribbing. It’s the promise of something beautiful, but still subtle and sleek – just like that little sprig of flowers pushing up from the new grass!

These mitts are worked in the round from the cuff up, and feature a cable-and-bobble motif placed on the back of the hand, along with a thumb gusset and modest twisted rib pattern all over. Written for Malabrigo Arroyo, or your preferred sport-weight wool yarn.

Sprig Fingerless Mitts by Glenna C

What Is Being Made

Sprig is a fingerless mitt pattern designed by Glenna C, perfect for knitters seeking a versatile accessory that keeps hands warm while leaving fingers free. These mitts are crafted to fit snugly around the hand with a comfortable, stretchy construction that accommodates various hand sizes through two distinct sizing options.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern offers two sizes:

  • Size S: Fits hand circumference of 6.5–7.0 inches
  • Size L: Fits hand circumference of 7.25–8.0 inches

The finished mitts are notably stretchy due to the extensive ribbing throughout the design, making them forgiving for hand measurements that fall between sizes. Measuring hand circumference around the widest part is recommended as the primary sizing method.

Knitting Techniques Used

Sprig employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that add both visual interest and functional stretch to the finished garment. The pattern features twisted ribbing, which creates a refined texture while providing the elasticity needed for a secure fit. Cable work is incorporated into the design, with instructions provided for both traditional cable needle methods and the alternative cabling-without-a-cable-needle technique for knitters who prefer to work without additional tools. Magic Loop knitting is offered as an alternative to double-pointed needles for working in the round, giving knitters flexibility in their preferred circular knitting method. The pattern also includes thumb gusset shaping, constructed using increases such as M1 (make one), which allows the mitt to accommodate the thumb while maintaining the overall fitted silhouette.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch patterns used in Sprig include:

  • Stockinette stitch – the foundational smooth fabric used for much of the mitt
  • Twisted ribbing – created by working knit through the back loop (ktbl) alternated with purl stitches, providing both stretch and a textured appearance
  • Cable stitches – integrated into the pattern for decorative texture and structural interest

The ribbing is worked in the round at a gauge of 10 stitches and 8 rounds per inch when relaxed, while the stockinette sections are worked at a gauge of 26 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches on the specified needles.

Materials Required

Sprig is an efficient pattern requiring minimal yardage, making it an economical project:

  • Yarn: 1 skein of Malabrigo Arroyo (100% superwash merino wool, 335 yards per 100-gram skein) – the superwash treatment makes these mitts easy to care for and ideal for everyday wear
  • Needles: 3.25mm/US #3 double-pointed needles in a set of 4, OR a 32–40 inch circular needle if using the Magic Loop method
  • Additional tools: Cable needle (optional if using the cabling-without-a-cable-needle method), waste yarn or stitch holder for managing stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Difficulty Level

Sprig is rated as an intermediate knitting pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The combination of ribbing, cables, and thumb gusset shaping requires comfort with working in the round, reading pattern instructions with size variations, and executing increases and cable maneuvers with confidence.
