Product Description

Tubular fairisle scarf with a multicolour fringe in a 4 ply Shetland yarn.

Yarn used is Jamieson Shetland Spindrift which comes in 25g balls. I have used 17 shades, but you could use fewer shades and still have a beautiful scarf.

Skills needed are circular knitting and simple two colour fairisle.

This pattern would suit an intermediate knitter or a beginner with some previous experience. This would be an excellent first fairisle project as the pattern is straightforward and all pattern stitches are knit.

What is Being Made

The Spindrift Fairisle Scarf is a tubular knitted scarf featuring multicolour fairisle patterning with a decorative fringe. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished accessory worked in the round, which means the reverse side of the fairisle rows remains hidden inside the tube for a polished appearance. The scarf incorporates a vibrant palette of 18 distinct yarn colours, making it an eye-catching and versatile piece suitable for intermediate knitters or beginners with prior knitting experience.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs two primary knitting techniques:

  • Circular Knitting: The scarf is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless tubular construction. This method eliminates the need for seaming and ensures that the purl side of fairisle work remains concealed within the tube.
  • Two-Colour Fairisle: A straightforward colour-work technique where two colours are carried and worked in each row. The fairisle method allows for intricate patterned designs without the complexity of more advanced colourwork techniques. All pattern stitches in this design are knit stitches, making it an excellent introductory fairisle project.

Stitches Used

The Spindrift Fairisle Scarf utilizes knit stitches exclusively throughout the pattern rows. This straightforward stitch selection makes the pattern accessible to intermediate knitters and beginners with some previous experience, as there are no purl stitches or complex stitch variations to master. The simplicity of the stitch work allows knitters to focus on managing the two-colour fairisle technique.

Materials

This pattern calls for Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift 4-ply yarn, a high-quality worsted-weight yarn ideal for fairisle work.
