Spider Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

What Is Being Made

This is a downloadable crochet pattern for creating a three-dimensional spider amigurumi-style toy. The pattern produces a finished spider measuring 11cm x 11cm (4" x 4") when made with 8 ply wool, or a smaller 6cm x 6cm (2.5" x 2.5") version when worked in 4 ply crochet cotton. The spider features a structured body with legs and embroidered facial details including eyes and mouth.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters with basic experience. The construction begins with a magic loop, a popular method for starting projects in the round. The pattern uses amigurumi-style construction, which involves creating three-dimensional forms through strategic increases and decreases. Assembly techniques include seaming pieces together using a sewing needle and thread, and embroidery work to add facial features. The pattern also requires weaving in ends with a darning needle to finish the piece neatly.

Crochet Stitches Used

The spider pattern incorporates a variety of essential crochet stitches to create texture and structure:

  • Chain stitch (ch) - Used for foundation and spacing
  • Single crochet (sc) - A fundamental stitch for tight, dense fabric
  • Half double crochet (hdc) - Provides medium height and structure for the body
  • Double crochet (dc) - Creates taller stitches for shaping
  • Treble crochet (tr) - The tallest stitch in this pattern, used strategically for body definition
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - Used to join rounds and create seamless connections

Materials and Tools Required

This pattern is designed for use with DK weight yarn (also called light worsted in US terminology or double knit in UK terminology). The original pattern was created using 8 ply wool in grey, white, and black colorways, though the pattern accommodates alternative yarn weights for different finished sizes.

Essential tools and materials include:

  • Crochet hook - 2.5mm size recommended for the standard version
  • Sewing needle and thread - For assembling the spider pieces together
  • Darning needle - For weaving in yarn ends after completion
  • Embroidery or sewing cotton - For embroidering facial details such as eye dots and mouth
  • Scissors - For cutting yarn

Pattern Format and Support

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it accessible for immediate use. The designer, Kerri's Crochet, offers supplementary learning resources including a video tutorial available on YouTube, allowing crafters to follow along visually while working through the pattern instructions.

Easy and immediate service

The spider pattern is adorable and the spiders are a good size. They encompass your entire hand and are very life like without being scary or creepy! Very nice pattern! Not too difficult, but they require some experience with crocheting and do take a bit of time.
