Product Description

This hat design was inspired by [Traveling Double Diamonds Tree of Life Baby Throw][1] designed by Detroit Knitter.

She created a modified version of Nicky Epstein’s Baby Tree Throw. I loved the way these stitches worked out and Soul Mates is the result.

It is a light weight and cozy for the early spring into fall. This hat is constructed bottom up on double pointed needles (dpns). One can use US5 needles if US4 is tight.

The tree pattern is a multiple of 48 sts, with increases and decreases of 8 sts worked in the pattern. It is worked on the front of the hat, while the back is worked in st st. The odd rounds follow the chart or instructions, while the even rounds follow the pattern as established.

What Is Being Made

The Soul Mates Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat design created by designer Tatyana Stanziale. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished hat measuring 9 inches in length with a circumference of 19-20 inches, making it suitable for average adult head sizes. The hat features decorative stitch work inspired by tree and diamond motifs, drawing creative influence from the Traveling Double Diamonds Tree of Life Baby Throw design.

Design Inspiration and Concept

The Soul Mates Hat design was inspired by the Traveling Double Diamonds Tree of Life Baby Throw, a modified version of Nicky Epstein's Baby Tree Throw. Designer Tatyana Stanziale was captivated by how the stitches worked in that original design and adapted those stitch techniques to create this hat pattern. The resulting design showcases beautiful tree stitch elements that form the visual centerpiece of the finished garment.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate knitting project employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes tree stitch as a primary decorative element, which creates the distinctive diamond and tree-like patterns throughout the hat. Additional techniques include:

  • K1tbl (knit through back loop) – a technique that creates a twisted stitch by inserting the needle through the back loop rather than the front, adding texture and visual interest
  • M1L (make one left) – an increase technique that lifts the horizontal thread between needles and places it on the left needle, then knits through the back loop to create a new stitch
  • K2tog (knit two together) – a basic decrease that combines two stitches into one
  • P2tog (purl two together) – a decrease worked in purl stitch
  • Cable needle work – used to manipulate stitches for creating the dimensional tree and diamond stitch patterns

The pattern is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, a traditional method for creating seamless hats. Stitch markers are used throughout to track pattern repeats and maintain consistent shaping.

Yarn and Materials

The Soul Mates Hat requires 203 yards of DK weight yarn, which is a light worsted or sport-weight yarn category ideal for creating garments with good drape and stitch definition. The pattern sample was created using Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly in white, a 100% acrylic yarn available in 5-ounce skeins containing 446 yards (408 meters). This yardage requirement means approximately half a skein is needed to complete the project.

Tools and Equipment

To complete this knitting project, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • US 4 / 3.5 mm double-pointed needles (dpns) or the size required to obtain proper gauge
  • 6 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and increases
  • Cable needle for manipulating stitches in the tree and diamond patterns
  • Needle for weaving in ends after completion

Gauge and Sizing

Obtaining the correct gauge is essential for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rounds equals 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the pattern stitch. This gauge measurement ensures that your finished hat will achieve the intended dimensions of 9 inches in length and 19-20 inches in circumference. Knitters should swatch before beginning to verify their personal gauge matches the pattern requirements, as variations in tension can affect the final fit.

Skill Level and Pattern Notes

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle decorative stitch patterns and shaping techniques. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and bracket notation to indicate where tree stitches should be worked. Familiarity with reading knitting charts, working in the round with double-pointed needles, and executing increase and decrease stitches is recommended before beginning this project.
