Solstice Glow Coaster Set by Bunnymuff
What is Being Made
The Solstice Glow coaster set is a collection of knitted coasters designed by Mona Zillah of bunnymuff. This downloadable knitting pattern creates multiple coasters suitable for table settings, with each coaster featuring coordinated colorways inspired by solstice themes. The set celebrates both summer and winter solstices, capturing the aesthetic of Earth's orbital extremes through thoughtfully selected yarn colors and knit construction.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting pattern of intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex projects. The pattern incorporates traditional knitting fundamentals combined with colorwork techniques. In addition to standard knitting, the pattern utilizes duplicate stitch for adding fine details and embellishment work, allowing crafters to add personalized finishing touches to their coasters.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout the Solstice Glow coasters is the knit stitch, forming the foundation of the fabric. The pattern also references crochet terminology for edge details and finishing, including:
- Chain (ch) - for creating foundation edges
- Single crochet / Double crochet (sc/dc) - worked by inserting the hook, yarning over and drawing through stitches, then completing the loop
- Half double crochet / Half treble crochet (hdc/htc) - executed by yarning over, inserting the hook, and drawing through to create taller stitch heights
- Duplicate stitch - an embroidery technique worked over completed knit fabric for adding contrasting color details
Materials and Yarn
The Solstice Glow coasters are designed to be worked with Shetland 4ply yarn by Gathered Sheep Yarns, a fingering-weight yarn made from 100% pure Shetland wool. Each mini skein provides 96 yards (87.8 meters) of yarn per 20-gram skein.
The pattern calls for multiple colorways to create the complete set. Each individual coaster requires approximately:
- Background A (Ghoulish Cocktail) - 6 grams / 28 yards (27 meters)
- Foreground A (Dove) - 5 grams / 23 yards (22 meters)
- Background B (Heathland) - 6 grams / 28 yards (27 meters)
- Foreground B (Natural) - 5 grams / 23 yards (22 meters)
- Edge detail for A & B - 1 gram / 5 yards (5 meters)
- Small bits of yarn for duplicate stitch embellishment and finishing
The pattern is worked using standard knitting needles appropriate for 4ply / fingering-weight yarn, along with a crochet hook for edge finishing details. The use of pure Shetland wool provides excellent stitch definition for both the knit base and the duplicate stitch embellishments, ensuring the colorwork details remain crisp and visible.
