Socksignia Knitted Socks by Peri Wilson

What Is Being Made

Socksignia is a pair of top-down knitted socks designed by independent designer Peri Wilson. These socks feature a distinctive chevron panel on both the back and front, creating an eye-catching geometric pattern. The design includes a traditional heel flap and under-foot gusset construction, making them both visually interesting and structurally sound. Available in two different lengths to suit various preferences, Socksignia socks are described as fun to knit and comfortable to wear, suitable for everyone. The socks are finished with a semi-slant toe for a refined fit.

Knitting Techniques Used

Socksignia employs several fundamental sock knitting techniques that make it an intermediate-level project. The top-down construction method begins at the cuff and works downward toward the toe, allowing knitters to try on the socks as they progress. The chevron panel pattern on the front and back requires understanding of directional stitch manipulation. A traditional heel flap is incorporated, which involves working back and forth in rows to create a reinforced heel section. The under-foot gusset technique adds shaping and comfort by increasing stitches strategically around the heel area and then decreasing them to return to the original stitch count. The semi-slant toe finishing requires careful decreasing to create an angled, tapered toe closure.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes a range of standard knitting stitches and techniques. The foundation stitch is stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, flat fabric used throughout most of the sock. The chevron pattern relies on directional stitches including:

  • K (knit) and P (purl) - the two fundamental stitches that form all knitted fabric
  • LT (left twist) - a special instruction where you skip the first stitch, knit the second stitch through the back of the loop, then knit the skipped stitch, creating a twisted stitch that leans left
  • RT (right twist) - the counterpart to left twist, creating stitches that lean right
  • Ktbl (knit through the back of the loop) - twisting stitches for texture and pattern definition
  • K2tog (knit 2 together) and P2tog (purl 2 together) - decrease stitches by working two stitches as one
  • SSK (slip, slip, knit) - a left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually, then knitting them together through the back loops
  • sl1 (slip one) - passing a stitch from one needle to another without working it, often used with yarn positioning (wyb - with yarn at back, or wyf - with yarn at front) for edge stitches and pattern work
  • PM (place marker) and SM (slip marker) - techniques for marking pattern repeats and construction sections

Materials and Gauge

Socksignia requires 100 grams of sock weight yarn (4-ply) for both available sizes, making it an efficient project with minimal yardage requirements. The pattern calls for 2.5mm circular needles in either 80cm or 100cm lengths, or alternatively 2.5mm double-pointed needles for those who prefer traditional sock knitting needles. A tapestry needle is needed for grafting the toe closure. The recommended gauge is 32 stitches over 47 rounds (rows) measured over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch, which is typical for sock-weight yarn and ensures the finished socks will fit properly and have the correct drape and comfort.
