What is Being Made
Snuggly pants is a knitted trouser and shorts pattern designed by Justine Turner for babies and toddlers. The pattern offers both long pants and short shorts options in five sizes ranging from 3 months to 24 months, with chest measurements from 40.5 cm to 50.5 cm. This downloadable PDF pattern provides a complete design for creating cute, comfortable knitwear for infants and young children.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Snuggly pants pattern incorporates several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques appropriate for creating well-fitted children's garments. The design employs a 3 needle bind off technique, which is a professional method for joining two sets of stitches together with the right sides facing each other. This technique involves arranging stitches on two needles with right sides together, then using a third needle to knit corresponding stitches from both needles together, followed by slipping stitches over in a conventional cast off manner. This creates a seamless, durable join ideal for constructing garment pieces.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes knitwise cast off as the standard finishing method unless otherwise specified in the instructions. The construction method allows for creating both long and short leg variations from a single pattern, providing versatility for different seasons and preferences.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Snuggly pants requires sport weight or light DK yarn in a wool or wool blend fiber. The yardage requirements vary by size, with approximately 166 meters (181 yards) per 50 grams (1.76 ounces) needed for the project. The designer notes successful results with DK weight wool yarns at both 137 meters to 50 grams and 166 meters to 50 grams, confirming that yarns within this weight range perform well for this pattern.
Needles
The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for sport and light DK weight yarns, though specific needle sizes are referenced in the full pattern instructions not detailed in this excerpt.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The inclusion of the 3 needle bind off and the precision required for properly fitting children's garments places it above beginner level while remaining accessible to knitters developing their skills.
