Product Description

The Snow Forest is a magical place where time seems to stand still. Lotta found the forest one summer's day, when her daily walk took her in a new directiion. Nestled in the tall trees, she discovered a long abandoned log cabin.

Over the next few months, she spent every spare moment bringing the little house back to life. By the time the first fluffy white snowflakes began to fall, Lotta and her faithful dog Stig, had made this incredible place their own.

The Snow Forest socks are a design that reflect the feeling of Lotta's special home. The lace panel down each leg depicts the tall pine trees and many paths that wind through the forest.

The socks are worked cuff down, and feature a beautifully fitting afterthought heel. There is a video tutorial included within the pattern showing how to cut in the heel. The design also features my Umbrella Heel.

The socks are knitted using a skein of fingering weight yarn from The Wool Barn, in 'Nougat'. The design somes in 3 sizes.

Snow Forest Socks by Kay Jones

What is Being Made

Snow Forest socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Kay Jones that capture the enchanting atmosphere of a magical forest setting. The design tells the story of Lotta's discovery of an abandoned log cabin nestled among tall pine trees, which she restored over several months. The socks serve as a wearable representation of this special place, combining practical footwear with artistic storytelling through their construction and decorative elements.

Design Features and Inspiration

The Snow Forest socks feature a distinctive lace panel running down each leg that depicts the tall pine trees and winding paths characteristic of the forest that inspired the design. This lace work transforms the socks from simple everyday wear into a piece of wearable art that reflects the natural beauty and magical quality of Lotta's forest home. The pattern captures the feeling of a place where time seems to stand still, bringing that sense of wonder to the knitter's needles.

Knitting Techniques Used

These socks are knitted top down, a construction method that allows knitters to try on the socks as they work and easily adjust the length to achieve a perfect fit. The pattern incorporates lace work along the leg sections, requiring knitters to work yarn overs and decreases to create the openwork design that represents the forest imagery. The socks also feature two specialized heel and toe techniques that enhance both comfort and aesthetics.

Stitches and Heel/Toe Construction

The Snow Forest socks utilize lace stitches as the primary decorative element throughout the leg panels. The pattern includes an afterthought heel, a technique that allows knitters to pick up stitches later and work the heel separately, providing excellent fit and durability. The socks are finished with an Umbrella Toe, a specialized toe construction favored by the designer for its superior shaping and comfort.

Yarn and Materials

The Snow Forest socks require one skein of fingering weight yarn, making this an efficient project that doesn't require large yarn quantities. Fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn, is the ideal choice for sock knitting as it provides the right thickness for durable, well-fitting socks that are neither too thick nor too thin. Knitters will need appropriate needles for working with fingering weight yarn in the round, as the socks are constructed using circular knitting methods.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic sock construction. The lace work requires familiarity with yarn overs and decreases, while the top-down construction and specialized heel and toe techniques demand some experience with sock knitting fundamentals. Intermediate knitters will find this project rewarding as it combines technical skills with creative, meaningful design work.

Pattern Information

The Snow Forest pattern is a downloadable PDF format, allowing knitters to access the instructions immediately and work from digital or printed copies. This pattern is designed for personal use only and is the intellectual property of designer Kay Jones.
