Small Hope Shawl by Jennifer Owens

What Is Being Made

The Small Hope Shawl is an elegant, crescent-shaped knitted shawl designed by Jennifer Owens. This top-down shawl features a generous wingspan of approximately 72 inches (183 cm) with a maximum width of 15 inches (38 cm) at its widest point. The shawl's graceful crescent silhouette makes it versatile for multiple wearing styles, allowing knitters to drape and style it in various ways. The design is available in one size, though the pattern includes instructions for adjusting the finished dimensions to suit individual preferences.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Small Hope Shawl employs a combination of fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques that balance simplicity with visual interest. The majority of the shawl is constructed using garter stitch, a classic and meditative knit stitch that creates horizontal ridges and provides excellent drape for shawl designs.

  • Slipped stitches in garter are incorporated throughout the body of the shawl to add subtle texture and visual dimension while maintaining the straightforward garter stitch foundation
  • Traveling yarnovers feature prominently in the edging, creating delicate lace elements that frame the shawl and add an elegant finishing detail
  • The lace stitch pattern is provided in both chart form and line-by-line written instructions, accommodating different learning preferences and reading styles

This combination of techniques keeps intermediate knitters engaged throughout the project while remaining accessible to those with solid foundational skills.

Materials and Specifications

The Small Hope Shawl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 640 yards (585 meters) total. The pattern suggests Cape May Fibers Marine Silk, a premium yarn blend containing 51% cultivated silk, 29% superfine merino, and 20% SeaCell®. This fiber composition creates a luxurious, breathable fabric with excellent drape and a subtle sheen characteristic of silk-blend yarns.

Knitting is worked on US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles, which is the standard needle size for DK weight yarn and produces the appropriate fabric density for this shawl design. The pattern requires minimal notions: 4 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the knitting process.
