Small Classic Teddy Bear Crochet Pattern by Kristi Tullus

What Is Being Made

This is a small amigurumi-style teddy bear crochet pattern designed by Kristi Tullus. The finished bear measures 15.5 cm (6 inches) from head to toe, or 13.5 cm (5 3/8 inches) when sitting. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for creating a classic stuffed toy bear suitable for gifts, decoration, or collection.

Difficulty Level and Skills Required

This pattern is rated as Intermediate (Difficulty 3), making it suitable for crocheters with some experience. The pattern includes less common crochet techniques and simple shaping elements. Essential skills required include crocheting in spiral, working chain stitches, slip stitches, and single crochet stitches, as well as understanding increasing and decreasing techniques to shape the bear's body and features.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used

  • Spiral crochet: The foundation technique for creating seamless rounds in amigurumi construction
  • Chain stitch: Used for foundation and structural elements
  • Slip stitch: Applied for joining rounds and creating clean transitions
  • Single crochet stitch: The primary stitch for building the bear's body, head, and limbs
  • Increasing: Shaping technique to expand stitches where the bear widens
  • Decreasing: Shaping technique to taper areas and create definition

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern recommends Scheepjes 'Stone Washed', a sport weight cotton-acrylic blend yarn. This yarn weight category includes DK and sport weight options. Approximately 28 grams of yarn is needed per bear. The recommended yarn specifications are 50 g = 130 m, 8 ply weight, with 12 wraps per inch, classified as light weight (weight category 3).

Crochet Hook: A 2.50 mm to 3.00 mm crochet hook is required, equivalent to US sizes 2/C through 3/D. The pattern was tested with a 2.50 mm hook for the specified finished measurements.

Stuffing and Embellishments: Polyester fiberfill, wool, or wadding is needed for stuffing the bear to create dimension and structure. For the bear's eyes and joints, the pattern offers flexible options including 8mm (1/3 inch) safety eyes or buttons, beads, or felt pieces. Doll joints are also specified: two 10mm (2/5 inch) and two 8mm (1/3 inch) plastic doll joints, safety eyes, cotter pin joints, or buttons, depending on maker preference and safety requirements.

Additional Supplies: Dark brown cotton embroidery floss is used for fine details such as facial features. A yarn needle, scissors, and stitch marker complete the essential tools needed to complete the project.
