Product Description

These writing gloves were inspired by the decorative ladder stitch that, to me, resembles dragonflies or skeeter eaters. It's a basic and simple pattern, completely symmetrical, that is easy to adjust for both circumference and length. If you're familiar with making mitts, it can also be adapted for different yarn weights. The fancy bit of stitching is completed at the end!

Skeeter Writing Gloves by Wanded Knit and Crochet

Project Overview

The Skeeter Writing Gloves are knitted fingerless gloves designed by Jenny Noto of Wanded Knit and Crochet. These gloves are inspired by the decorative ladder stitch, which visually resembles dragonflies and skeeters (mosquitoes). The design draws thematic inspiration from the Harry Potter character Rita Skeeter, a journalist known for sensationalized reporting rather than truthful storytelling. These gloves are ideal for writers, students, or anyone who needs hand warmth while maintaining finger dexterity for typing or writing.

Craft and Difficulty Level

This is an intermediate-level knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle decorative stitch techniques. The pattern requires understanding of basic knitting construction as well as the ladder stitch, which creates the distinctive visual element that inspired the glove's name and aesthetic.

Stitches and Techniques

The primary decorative feature of these gloves is the ladder stitch, which creates a pattern resembling dragonflies or skeeters. This stitch adds visual interest while maintaining the functionality of fingerless gloves. The pattern includes shaping for a thumb gusset, requiring knitters to increase and manage stitches to accommodate the thumb opening. The construction method is flexible, allowing knitters to choose between working on short needles (DPNs), circular needles, or the magic loop method.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (weight category 4) in a total yardage of 90–105 yards
  • Needles: US 4 / 3.5mm needles in one of three formats: short double-pointed needles (DPNs), circular needles, or needles suitable for the magic loop method
  • Notions: Stitch markers (2 required, or 4 if you wish to mark the thumb gusset as you work), a removable progress keeper, and a tapestry needle for finishing

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Wanded Knit and Crochet. The pattern includes detailed instructions, photographs, and all necessary guidance to complete the project. Knitters are encouraged to read through the entire pattern before beginning to ensure familiarity with all techniques and construction methods.
