Product Description
Stranded fair isle is one of the most revered traditions in knitting. If, like many knitters, you shrink at the thought of carrying all those colors of yarn (oh, the tangling!) and the need for perfect floats (hello, puckering!), I see you. Finally, here is a pattern for two different faux fair isle hats made using just one color per row! No magic spells required.
The pattern includes instructions for two different colorwork patterns.
Special kits are available while supplies last at my website.
Each kit has enough superwash wool yarn to make 3 hats!

Skaden Hat by Melissa Leapman
What is Being Made
Skaden is a knitted hat designed by Melissa Leapman, available in two finished sizes: Small/Medium with a circumference of 20 ½" and height of 8 ½", and Large/1X with a circumference of 23 ½" and height of 9 ½". This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished, wearable hat using a combination of colorwork and shaping techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Skaden hat employs several essential knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The construction begins with circular knitting on a 16" circular needle, then transitions to double-pointed needles for the crown shaping. The design incorporates charted colorwork, with knitters working Chart 1 through Rounds 1–27 twice, followed by Rows 1–10 once, before completing the remainder of the hat in a single color. Decreasing is used to shape the crown, with a decrease round that reduces stitches from 96 (112) to 84 (98) using the k2tog (knit two together) technique.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit stitches and knit two together (k2tog) decreases for crown shaping. The hat features a charted pattern worked in the round, allowing for the integration of multiple yarn colors in a structured, repeatable design. The stitch count begins at 96 (112) stitches and decreases strategically during the crown shaping phase to create the hat's finished form.
Materials and Yarn
Skaden is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn. The pattern calls for Universal Yarns' Deluxe Worsted Superwash, which is a machine-washable worsted-weight yarn. The design uses four colors: Ginseng #707 (A), Shamrock Heather #754 (B), Terra Cotta #703 (C), and Spice Rustic #768 (D), with one 100g ball (218 yards) of each color. Notably, these four balls of yarn are sufficient to knit three complete hats, making this an efficient project for yarn use. A 16" circular knitting needle in size 7 (4.5 mm) is required to obtain proper gauge, along with one set of double-pointed needles for the crown decreases.
