Sinuous Cowl by Rachel Beth
What is Being Made
The Sinuous Cowl is a versatile neck accessory designed in two sizes: a Small version measuring 22.5 inches in circumference and 9 inches in height, and a Large version measuring 36.5 inches in circumference and 9 inches in height. Both versions feature adjustable dimensions, allowing crafters to customize the circumference by casting on multiples of 12 stitches, with each multiple adding just over 2 inches to the finished circumference. The height can also be modified by working additional or fewer pattern repeats in the body section or adjusting the ribbing at the beginning or end of the cowl.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project utilizes several essential knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction. The pattern incorporates cable work, requiring the use of a cable needle to create textured, twisted stitches that give the cowl its sinuous character. The construction begins with ribbed sections worked on smaller needles, followed by the patterned body worked on larger needles, creating visual and textural interest. The adjustable nature of the pattern makes it accessible for customization based on individual preferences and yarn availability.
Stitches Used
The Sinuous Cowl employs ribbing as a foundational stitch pattern, which provides elasticity and structure to the finished piece. Cable stitches are central to the design, creating the sinuous, twisted texture that defines this cowl. The pattern is worked in the round, utilizing stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistency throughout the project.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. The designer used Comfy brand yarn in worsted weight, which is composed of 75% Pima Cotton and 25% Acrylic, offering 109 yards per 50-gram skein. Two colorways are featured in the example: Peony and Hawk. The project requires two sets of circular needles: Size US 6/4.0 mm needles (available in both 16-inch and 32-inch lengths depending on size) for the ribbed sections, and Size US 8/5.0 mm needles (also available in 16-inch and 32-inch lengths) for the body. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, a cable needle for cable work, and optional stitch markers to track pattern repeats. The gauge is 21 stitches over 4 inches before blocking in both the ribbing and body sections.
