Project Overview
Simply Felted Ladies Slippers is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by knot•sew•cute for creating cozy, felted slippers in women's sizes 6 through 9. This intermediate-level crochet project combines traditional crochet techniques with wool felting to produce durable, cushioned footwear with a professional finished appearance.
What Is Being Made
These slippers are crafted as a complete pair of women's footwear featuring felted wool construction. The pattern includes sizing for four different shoe sizes, with felted lengths ranging from 21½ cm (8½") for size 6 up to 25½ cm (10") for size 9. The slippers feature a narrow width of 7½ cm (3") and a wider width of 9 cm (3½") across the foot, providing comfortable fit and support. Button closures are incorporated into the finishing details for both aesthetic appeal and functional fit adjustment.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate crochet pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques appropriate for crafters with basic to intermediate experience. The primary stitch used throughout the construction is the single crochet (sc), which creates a dense, sturdy fabric ideal for felting and wearing. The pattern also incorporates the following techniques:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and stitch construction
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building the slipper structure
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – a decrease technique for shaping the slipper to fit the foot contours
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Yarn over (YO) – fundamental crochet technique used in conjunction with other stitches
The pattern is worked holding 2 strands of yarn together, which increases fabric density and prepares the piece for the felting process that transforms the crocheted fabric into a firmer, more durable material.
Materials and Tools
The Simply Felted Ladies Slippers pattern calls for Patons® Classic Wool, a 100% wool yarn available in 100 g balls containing 192 meters of yardage. Depending on slipper size, the pattern requires between 3 and 3¼ balls of yarn, totaling approximately 300 g and 576 meters of material. The colorway shown in the pattern is Charcoal, though any comparable worsted-weight wool yarn may be substituted.
Essential tools include a 5.00 mm (H) crochet hook or the appropriate size needed to achieve the specified gauge. A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends and finishing seams. The pattern also calls for 4 to 22 mm buttons, sized according to finishing instructions, which serve as both decorative and functional closure elements on the completed slippers.
Gauge and Yarn Weight
The pattern specifies a gauge of 10 single crochet stitches and 10 rows equaling 7½ cm (3") in an unblocked square when worked with a 5.00 mm (H) crochet hook while holding 2 strands of worsted-weight yarn together. This gauge measurement is taken before felting. The worsted-weight yarn classification ensures that the doubled strands create appropriate fabric density for successful felting and finished slipper durability.
Felting Process
A defining characteristic of this pattern is the incorporation of wet felting, which transforms the crocheted wool fabric into a denser, more cohesive material. The felting process shrinks and compacts the crochet stitches, creating slippers with improved structure, insulation, and longevity. The finished felted dimensions provided in the pattern account for this shrinkage, with the final slippers measuring the specified lengths and widths after the felting process is complete.
Skill Level and Craftsmanship
Rated as an intermediate crochet project, Simply Felted Ladies Slippers is appropriate for crafters who have mastered basic crochet stitches and are ready to tackle shaping techniques and finishing details. The pattern's use of single crochet decreases (sc2tog) for foot shaping and button application for closures provides valuable skill-building opportunities while remaining accessible to experienced beginners.
