Product Description

These socks are great for someone on the go. The pattern is easy to memorize and can be thrown into a travel bag to take on your commute or travels. Since there are no travels between the needles, you can easy work these socks Two at a Time.

I was looking to design a pattern that would work with a yarn with short color changes. I wanted to have something that would break up any pooling that could happen and that would still show the beautiful colors in the design. They are written in three sizes and will fit a 7.5", 8.5" or 9.5" circumference of foot.

errata: Toe, Round 1 should read: Round 1: (K1, M1R, Knit to 1 stitch before end of needle, M1L, K1) Repeat between () on 2nd needle

Simplicity Socks by TLCrafts and Design

Project Overview

Simplicity Socks is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed by TLCrafts and Design for creating custom-fitted socks. This downloadable PDF pattern provides detailed instructions for knitting a pair of socks using the magic loop technique on circular needles, with options for double-pointed needles as an alternative method.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a complete pair of socks with three size options to accommodate different foot measurements. The finished sock measurements are available in Small (7 inches), Medium (8 inches), and Large (9 inches) unstretched circumference, allowing knitters to select the appropriate size for a custom fit.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Simplicity Socks pattern employs the magic loop technique as the primary construction method, which allows knitters to work small circumference projects on a single 40-inch circular needle by creating a loop with the cable. The pattern is written specifically for magic loop construction, though knitters experienced with double-pointed needles can adapt the instructions to use that traditional method instead. Both approaches enable seamless, in-the-round knitting to create the tubular sock structure.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches and increases to shape the sock:

  • Stockinette Stitch — the primary stitch used throughout the sock, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working in the round), producing a smooth, V-textured fabric
  • Kfb (Knit Front and Back) — an increase technique where the knitter works into the front of a stitch, then into the back of the same stitch without dropping it from the needle, creating one new stitch from one existing stitch
  • Pfb (Purl Front and Back) — the purl equivalent of the kfb increase, used when shaping requires increases in purl stitches

Gauge and Fit

The pattern is designed to be worked at a gauge of 16 stitches and 24 rounds per 2 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and ensuring the socks fit as intended.

Materials Required

Yarn: Approximately 400 yards of Into The Whirled GLOUCESTER SOCK yarn in the colorway Merlin's Beard. This yarn is composed of 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon, providing durability, softness, and easy care. The 4-ply weight yarn is ideal for sock knitting, creating a fabric with excellent elasticity and resilience.

Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches in length for magic loop construction, or alternatively, US 1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles for those preferring that method.

Additional Tools: A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends upon completion of the project.

Difficulty Level

Simplicity Socks is classified as an advanced-level pattern, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with in-the-round construction, working with small circumferences, and executing stitch increases. The pattern assumes familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques and the ability to follow detailed written instructions with multiple size variations presented in parenthetical notation.
