What Is Being Made

The Simple Sweater "Amber" is an oversized knitted pullover sweater designed for intermediate knitters. This garment features a relaxed, comfortable fit available in S/M sizing. The sweater combines classic stockinette stitch construction with a decorative honeycomb pattern on the sleeves, creating a visually interesting yet straightforward design suitable for crafters with some knitting experience.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The sweater is built using fundamental knitting techniques including casting on, working in the round and flat, and binding off. Key techniques employed include:

  • Elastic ribbing for fitted edges at the cuffs and hem
  • Gauge swatching and blocking to ensure proper fit and drape
  • Stockinette stitch as the main fabric throughout the body
  • Honeycomb pattern integration on the sleeves for textural detail
  • Proper tension adjustment based on individual knitting style

Stitches Used

The Simple Sweater "Amber" employs several essential knitting stitches:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used for the body and initial sleeve sections. This stitch is created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows, producing the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric.
  • Ribbing (1x1): An alternating knit and purl pattern (K1, P1) worked for 8-9 rows at the hem and cuffs to create elastic, fitted edges that hug the body.
  • Honeycomb Pattern: A textured stitch pattern applied to the sleeves beginning at row 26, adding visual interest and dimension to the finished garment.
  • Edge Stitches: Selvage stitches worked at the edges of pattern sections to create clean, finished edges.

Materials and Gauge

The Simple Sweater "Amber" is designed to work with super chunky weight yarn in any blend or pure wool composition. The pattern specifies a yardage requirement of 550-600 grams, with a standard conversion of 100 meters equaling 100 grams of yarn.

Gauge is critical to the success of this project. The pattern calls for a gauge of 9 stitches by 13 rows measured over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch. Knitters are strongly advised to knit and block a gauge swatch before beginning the sweater to verify their tension. Those who knit tightly and achieve more stitches and rows than required should use thicker needles; conversely, loose knitters should use thinner needles to achieve the correct gauge.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires the following needles and implements:

  • 10mm (US15) needles: Used for casting on and working the main body and initial sleeve sections in stockinette stitch.
  • 8mm (US11) circular needles: Employed for specific sections requiring circular knitting construction.
  • Crochet hook: Included in the materials list, likely for finishing techniques such as edging or securing bound-off stitches.

Construction Overview

The sweater is constructed in separate pieces that are later assembled. The back and front panels are knitted identically, beginning with a cast-on of 58 stitches on 10mm needles. After completing 8-9 rows of 1x1 ribbing, knitters transition to stockinette stitch and continue working until the piece measures 82 rows, then bind off on row 83.

The sleeves are cast on with 36 stitches and worked in stockinette stitch for the first 25 rows. Beginning at row 26, the honeycomb pattern is introduced, adding textural variation to the sleeve fabric. This combination of smooth and textured stitches creates a balanced, visually appealing finished garment.

Poor customer service & poor product

The pattern did not reach the acceptable UK standard. It was very difficult to follow. There were no clear instructions about the measurements the garment would fit. The instructions for the honeycomb stitch in reality produced a completely different stitch. I took the pattern to an experienced knitter at a wool shop and she also said it was extremely poor and she would not have been able to follow the pattern. I would never purchase any thing from love crafts again and the lady in the wool...
