Simple Handwarmers (2) by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
Simple handwarmers are a pair of knitted mittens designed for ease and speed of construction. These handwarmers are sized to fit hands up to 8 inches around as a snug fit, making them ideal for quick projects that can be completed in a single evening by experienced knitters. The pattern allows for customization in length and width to accommodate different hand sizes.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs fundamental techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The construction begins with a cast-on using either the two-needle method or rib method, which provides a secure foundation. The mittens are worked flat and then seamed together using a tapestry needle. The pattern incorporates ribbed sections at both the cuff and top of the mitten, which provide elasticity and a finished appearance. The main body is constructed using stocking stitch, a basic but essential technique that creates a smooth, professional fabric.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch used throughout the project
- Purl stitch (P) – combined with knit stitches to create texture and structure
- Broken rib pattern (K1, P1) – alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence to create the cuff and top sections. The broken rib is worked with knit and purl stitches on alternating rows for visual interest
- Stocking stitch – created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to form the main body of the mittens
- Ribwise cast-off – a finishing technique that maintains the elasticity of the ribbed edge
Materials and Construction Details
Each pair of handwarmers requires 1 ball of Sirdar Click Chunky with Wool, a chunky-weight yarn that works up quickly and provides warmth. The project uses 5mm knitting needles and a tapestry needle for seaming the finished pieces together. Knitters are advised to have an extra ball of yarn on standby for potential variations or adjustments.
The pattern calls for casting on 29 stitches for the standard size. For larger hands, the instructions recommend adding 4 stitches to the width for each additional inch of hand circumference. The mitten construction spans approximately 43 rows total: 10 rows of broken K1, P1 rib at the cuff, 28 rows of stocking stitch for the main body, and 5 rows of broken K1, P1 rib at the top, finished with a ribwise cast-off. When casting on, knitters should leave at least 8 inches of yarn for seaming purposes.
The broken rib variation featured in this pattern is particularly suited to plain yarns, as the textured stitch pattern provides visual interest without competing with variegated or patterned yarn colors. The simple stitch combination of knit and purl makes this project accessible to knitters who have mastered basic techniques, while the chunky yarn weight ensures relatively quick completion.
