Product Description
The Silver Plaited Infinity Scarf employs reversible cables for a thick, squishy, comfy scarf that is beautiful no matter how it lies. It is 5.75” wide by 53” long and knit in a pima cotton/acrylic blend with some shine to it. Being knit with cotton, it is perfectly soft for those with more sensitive skin, or for days that aren’t so cold, when you wish for the comfort of a soft scarf to wrap around you. It was inspired by a piece of silver Celtic jewelry and my love for braids.
Because it is essentially double-knit, a high yardage of yarn is required.
A magnetic board is recommended for keeping track of rows- cables are worked on both sides of the piece.
Other materials needed: crochet hook for provisional cast on, smooth cotton waste yarn or stitch holder, 8 stitch markers, cable needle, and darning needle
sample was knit with 5 skeins of Knit Picks Comfy sport (75% pima cotton, 25% acrylic; 136 yds 124m/1.76 oz 50g): I054, Whisker (discontinued)
Silver Plaited Infinity Scarf by Stefanie Johnson
Project Overview
The Silver Plaited Infinity Scarf is an advanced knitting project designed by Stefanie Johnson that creates a reversible, thick, and squishy infinity scarf suitable for year-round wear. Finished measurements are 5.75 inches wide by 53.5 inches long. This design is inspired by Celtic jewelry and braided patterns, offering a sophisticated accessory that looks beautiful regardless of how it drapes around the neck.
Fiber Content and Materials
This scarf is knit using 250 grams of sport weight yarn in a pima cotton and acrylic blend. The sample featured in the pattern uses Knit Picks Comfy Sport yarn, which consists of 75% pima cotton and 25% acrylic, providing 136 yards per 1.76 ounces (50 grams). The cotton content makes this scarf exceptionally soft and breathable, ideal for individuals with sensitive skin or for warmer weather when a lightweight scarf is preferred. The yarn blend includes subtle shine, adding visual interest to the finished piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work
The Silver Plaited Infinity Scarf employs reversible cables as its primary design element, creating texture and visual interest on both sides of the fabric. This advanced technique ensures the scarf is equally attractive whether worn with cables showing on the outside or inside. The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches and techniques to achieve its dimensional, braided appearance.
Key stitches and abbreviations used in this pattern include:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch
- Purl (p) – the basic purl stitch
- Knit through the back loop (k-tbl) – a variation that twists the stitch for textural effect
- Slip 1 with yarn in front (s1 wyif) – slipping a stitch with working yarn positioned in front to create clean edges or prepare for cable crossings
- Cast on (CO) – the foundation technique for beginning the project
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) measured in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this advanced project to ensure the finished scarf meets the intended dimensions and drape characteristics.
Skill Level
Classified as an advanced knitting project, the Silver Plaited Infinity Scarf is best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable working with cable techniques and interpreting pattern instructions. The reversible cable construction requires attention to detail and understanding of cable mechanics to execute successfully.
