Product Description
I really wanted a big, cozy, textured cowl this Winter. I wanted to knit it in a motif that was simple and bold, like garter. And I wanted it in a soft, decadent yarn that would feel great wrapped around my neck.
The mix of merino, silk and yak in Plucky's Traveler Aran made it perfect for my vision- soft, cozy & light with amazing drape, but big & round in aran. Begging to be cowled up.
Instead of working my texture in simple garter or seed stitch I found a slipped stitch that really adds to the squishiness of the fabric, bunching things up just so & giving the cowl a light but thick quality that really works when wrapped around your neck. I broke the texture into sections with simple ribs & worked 'til the yarn ran low. It's addictive, but super-simple, and looks just a little harder than it is ;)
If necessary it would be easy to modify this for length or width by playing with the amount of repeats.
Sample is in Plucky Traveler Aran. Other listed yarns are suggested substitutes.
Silver Gin Fizz Cowl by BabyCocktails
What is Being Made
The Silver Gin Fizz is a knitted cowl designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This is a wearable accessory featuring a finished width of 12 inches and a length of 48 inches, making it suitable for wrapping around the neck with comfortable drape and coverage. The design showcases a distinctive puckered fabric created through strategic stitch placement.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level cowl employs slipped stitches as a primary construction technique. The slipped stitches create the characteristic gathered and puckered texture throughout the fabric, which affects how the stitches and rows compress. The designer notes that while the row gauge appears dense at 7.5 rows per inch, this density is a direct result of the slipped stitch technique gathering the rows together rather than indicating overly tight tension.
The cowl is worked in a repeating pattern structure, with each pattern repeat measuring 3 stitches wide and producing approximately 1 inch of finished width. The designer recommends adjusting the overall width by modifying the number of pattern repeats used, working in multiples of 3 stitches to maintain pattern integrity.
Stitches Used
- Slipped stitches (primary stitch technique creating the puckered texture)
- 3-stitch repeating pattern
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 skeins of Plucky Knitter Traveler Aran weight yarn, with each skein containing 220 yards. The sample shown is worked in the Flannel colorway. The designer emphasizes that this cowl works well in most yarn weights and fibers, but recommends selecting a thick, soft fiber with excellent drape characteristics for optimal results.
Needles: US #9 (5.5mm) needles, or whatever size is needed to achieve the specified gauge. The designer suggests swatching with a needle one size larger than the yarn's recommended needle size when substituting alternative yarns.
Notions: Stitch markers and a darning needle for finishing.
Gauge and Sizing Notes
The gauge is based on finished blocked fabric: each 3-stitch pattern repeat equals 1 inch in width, with 7.5 rows per inch in height. The designer provides helpful context that the finished width measures just under 50 inches when accounting for the puckering effect, and the high row gauge is characteristic of the slipped stitch construction rather than a sign of tension issues. Swatching is recommended when substituting yarns to ensure accurate sizing.
