Shells and Sea Glass Knit Hats by Ashley Knowlton
What is Being Made
The Shells and Sea Glass pattern collection features two distinct hat designs: a classic Tam and a Slouchy Beret. Both styles are available in two sizes—Adult Small/Medium (to fit head circumference 18-20 inches / 46-51 cm) and Large (to fit head circumference 21-24 inches / 51-61 cm). The Tam finishes at a depth of 9 inches (23 cm), while the Slouchy Beret offers a more relaxed silhouette with a finished depth of 11.5 inches (29 cm). Both designs feature a finished brim circumference of 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) for the smaller size and 19.25 inches (49 cm) for the larger size.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its finished structure. The pattern utilizes two strands of yarn held together during the brim ribbing section, which creates a denser, more elastic fabric ideal for a snug hat band. The construction uses circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpns) or the Magic Loop method for working in the round, allowing for seamless construction throughout both hat styles. The pattern includes blocking instructions using a dinner plate as an optional blocking tool, which helps achieve proper finished dimensions and fabric definition.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in this design is the Brim Rib Pattern, which provides structure and stretch at the hat's lower edge. The ribbed construction at the brim ensures a secure, comfortable fit that hugs the head without slipping. The pattern incorporates additional stitch work beyond the ribbing to create the body of both the Tam and Slouchy Beret, though specific stitch names for the crown sections are referenced within the full pattern instructions.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Shells and Sea Glass pattern is designed for fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn. For the Tam style, knitters will need 220 yards (200 meters) for the Small/Medium size or 260 yards (240 meters) for the Large size. The Slouchy Beret requires slightly more yardage: 250 yards (228 meters) for Small/Medium or 290 yards (265 meters) for Large. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Posh Sylvia 4ply, a luxury blend of 50% merino wool and 50% silk, which provides both warmth and a lustrous sheen. This yarn is available at 440 yards per 100 grams (400 meters per 100 grams).
The pattern notes that knitters seeking a fuller-bodied beret may substitute DK weight yarn to achieve their desired fabric density and drape. This flexibility allows for customization based on personal preference and available materials.
Needles and Notions Required
- US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle, 16 inches (40 cm) long—used for the ribbed brim section
- US 8 (5mm) circular needle, 16 inches (40 cm) long or longer for Magic Loop, and/or a set of five double-pointed needles—used for the main body and crown of the hat
- Stitch marker for tracking rounds
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Dinner plate (optional) for blocking purposes
Gauge
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies that 20 stitches measured over 4 inches (10 cm) in the Brim Rib Pattern with two strands of yarn held together and US 4 (3.5mm) needles, after blocking. Knitters are advised to always use the needle size that will help them obtain the correct gauge, as this directly impacts the finished hat's circumference and overall fit.
