Shell Point Shawlette by Blarney Yarn
What Is Being Made
The Shell Point Shawlette is a crescent-shaped knitted shawlette designed by Miryha Runnerstrom. This versatile accessory can be worn like a scarf around the neck to provide warmth during cool weather. The shawlette is inspired by Sanibel Island, a barrier island along Florida's gulf coast renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches and abundant seashells, with the design reflecting the aesthetic of shell patterns found in nature.
Craft and Project Type
This is an advanced-level knitting project offered as a downloadable PDF pattern. The shawlette construction uses a top-down crescent shape that begins with a cast-on of 255 stitches and expands through strategic increases and decreases to create the distinctive curved silhouette.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Shell Point Shawlette employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its elegant appearance and structure:
- Yarn overs (yo) create decorative eyelets and lace openings throughout the pattern, adding visual interest and lightness to the fabric
- Decreases including k4tog tbl (knit four together through the back loop) and k4tog (knit four together) are used to shape the shawlette and create definition in the lace pattern
- Garter stitch (knitting every row) forms the foundation and edge sections, providing structure and stability
- Stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) creates smooth fabric sections between the lace elements
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The pattern uses a repeating lace motif worked over 8 rows. The core stitches include knit, purl, yarn overs, and multiple-stitch decreases. The lace pattern features a rhythmic repeat of yarn overs paired with knit stitches, creating openwork sections, alternating with stockinette stitch areas and garter stitch edging. This combination of techniques produces a shell-inspired texture that is both structurally sound and visually striking.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Shell Point Shawlette is designed to work with 4-ply yarn weight (also known as worsted or medium weight), offering flexibility in fiber choice. The pattern is ideal for using up extra skeins or leftover yardage, making it an excellent stash-busting project. Sock yarn or other 4-ply weight yarns work beautifully for this design, allowing crafters to experiment with different fiber contents and colors while maintaining the intended drape and finished dimensions of approximately 58 inches in length and 6¾ inches in depth at the widest point.
Pattern Difficulty
Rated as an advanced project, the Shell Point Shawlette is best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable working with lace patterns, managing multiple-stitch decreases, and interpreting written pattern instructions. The combination of yarn overs, complex decreases, and the need to maintain stitch count throughout makes this an engaging project for knitters looking to expand their technical skills.
