Product Description
Show your sheepy love! A worthy partner to my popular Sheep Shuffle Mitts pattern, these socks will keep your toes warm while celebrating your love for all things woolly.
These stranded socks use a fun motif to give impressive results. Starting with a twisted rib cuff, knitting continues down the leg using a simple chart. The toe is closed with Kitchener Stitch, and the afterthought heel uses spaced decreases for a beautiful swirl.
Written for 5 sizes, the pattern includes links to length and sizing charts, so you can adjust to give a perfect fit for the wearer. Finished Circumference: 5.75” (6.75”, 8”, 9”, 10.25”).
Choose a main colour and a single contrast colour for a sophisticated look, or up to 12 CCs for a fun rainbow of sheepy goodness. These are also a great stashbusting project. Sample is shown in size S, with foot length to fit US Women’s 8-9/UK Women’s 6-7/EUR 39. Sample pair used 30g MC and 18g of each CC.
This pattern has been professionally tech edited.
Sheep Shuffle Socks by Sophie McKane
What is Being Made
Sheep Shuffle Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a colorwork sock design created by independent designer Sophie McKane. The pattern includes five sizes ranging from XXS (for small children) through L, with finished circumferences from 5.75" to 10.25" to accommodate various foot sizes from US Women's 6-7 (EUR 39) through larger adult feet. The sample shown features a size S with a finished foot circumference of 8".
Techniques and Stitches
Primary Technique: This is a stranded colorwork knitting project, also known as fair isle knitting. The pattern incorporates color changes worked in the round, with specific attention to managing yarn floats—the strands of yarn carried across the inside of the work when not in active use.
Stitch Details: The socks are worked using stranded pattern stitch in the round. The gauge is 32 stitches and 40 rounds per 4 inches when worked in the stranded pattern stitch in the round. The pattern includes specific chart rounds (noted as rounds 8 and 16) where yarn floats span across six stitches; the pattern instructions emphasize catching these floats on the inside of the sock to prevent loose, snagging strands and ensure a neat, durable interior finish.
Construction Method: The socks are knit in the round using either double point needles or the magic loop method with long circular needles, allowing for seamless construction from cuff to toe.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for John Arbon Exmoor Sock yarn in three colorways: Mizzle (main color, grey), Bell Heather (contrast color 1, pink), and Blooth (contrast color 2, purple). The yarn weight is 4-ply, which is a lightweight fingering-weight yarn ideal for sock knitting. The sample size S uses 30g (130 yards) of the main color and 18g (80 yards) each of the two contrast colors. Total yardage requirements vary by size.
Tools and Notions: Knitters will need US 1.5/2.5mm double point needles or long circular needles (for magic loop method), five stitch markers, waste yarn for provisional cast-on or other techniques, and small sharp scissors for finishing.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While basic sock knitting experience is helpful, the main challenge lies in managing the stranded colorwork technique and properly catching yarn floats to maintain an even, professional appearance on the inside of the finished socks.
Pattern Notes
- The XXS size is specifically designed to fit small children's feet
- The pattern recommends measuring the intended wearer's foot circumference and length for best fit results
- Negative ease of 0" to 0.25" is built into the sizing, meaning the finished sock circumference is slightly smaller than the foot measurement for a secure, non-slipping fit
- Careful attention to float management on chart rounds 8 and 16 is essential for durability and appearance
