Product Description
How to crochet a cute, easy single crochet bag perfect for running errands or a night out on the town, or if you're like me, holding your crochet supplies! Great project for beginners or advanced alike. You'll need 115 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn - I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Dark Pine colorway, H8/5mm Crochet Hook and Tapestry Needle. I do recommend cotton yarn because it’s more durable, and this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and being pulled and pushed around in a larger bag/purse. Optional supplies include: Fabric for Lining & Zipper (I used a pre-made bag that I got at Hobby Lobby and stuck inside and then sewed in place - it measured 9" wide by 6" tall) or Sewing Needle & Thread or Sewing Machine & Thread (for lining). For reference, I had my bag finished in a little over an hour and fifteen minutes. Gauge is only essential if using a similar lining to mine, and it's measured in pattern: 15 SC by 17 Rows = 4.13" (or 4 1/8") Wide.
Shay Cosmetic Bag or Hook Pouch by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots
What is Being Made
The Shay Cosmetic Bag or Hook Pouch is a practical, beginner-friendly crochet project designed for everyday use. This versatile bag is perfect for organizing cosmetics, holding crochet supplies, or carrying essentials for running errands or a night out. The finished pouch measures approximately 9" x 6", making it an ideal size for a clutch or small accessory bag.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created entirely using crochet, a fiber craft that uses a single hook to form interlocking loops of yarn. The Shay Cosmetic Bag employs straightforward crochet construction methods suitable for beginners, making it an accessible introduction to bag-making for those new to the craft.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes single crochet as the primary stitch throughout the project. Single crochet is one of the most fundamental crochet stitches, creating a tight, dense fabric that provides durability and structure—essential qualities for a functional bag that will experience regular handling and storage of items.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The project requires 115 yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn. The designer used Lily Sugar n Cream in Dark Pine for the sample. Cotton yarn is specifically recommended for this project because of its superior durability; the bag will withstand frequent use, pulling, and being carried inside larger bags or purses.
Yarn Alternatives:
- Lion Brand Re-Up
- WeCrochet Dishie (paired with I9/5.5mm Hook due to slightly thinner weight)
- Red Heart Super Saver (with I9/5.5mm Hook)
- Bernat Super Value (with I9/5.5mm Hook)
- Caron One Pound
The primary hook size is H8/5mm. Alternative hook sizes (I9/5.5mm) are recommended when using yarns that are slightly thinner than cotton, as they prevent an overly relaxed fabric tension.
Additional Materials
Beyond the yarn and hook, the pattern calls for a Tapestry Needle for weaving in yarn ends. For those interested in creating a lined version, optional materials include fabric, a zipper, a sewing machine, and needle and thread. The designer used a pre-made 9" x 6" bag lining from Hobby Lobby as an alternative to constructing a lining from scratch.
Difficulty Level and Time Investment
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent project for those learning to crochet or seeking a quick, satisfying make. The project can be completed in just over one hour and fifty minutes, providing a rewarding finished object in a single crafting session.
