Product Description

Shattered Stars is a stunning semi-circular shawl, worked top down with a diamond motif. In Ancient Greece, diamonds were believed to be fragments of the stars and here you can see them falling from the sky and getting bigger as they reach the bottom of the shawl. This is the perfect way to show off a favourite yarn!

The pattern includes both charts and written instructions, so however you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. These additional techniques are used: provisional cast on, garter stitch tab and stretchy cast off.

Shattered Stars Semi-Circular Knit Shawl by Liz Corke

What is Being Made

Shattered Stars is a stunning semi-circular shawl designed by independent knit designer Liz Corke. This advanced-level knitting project features a beautiful diamond motif that creates a visual narrative inspired by Ancient Greek mythology. The design concept draws from the ancient belief that diamonds were fragments of stars, and the shawl's construction showcases this theme by displaying diamonds that appear to fall from the sky and progressively enlarge as they descend toward the bottom edge of the finished piece. This semi-circular shawl design is ideal for showcasing a favorite yarn and serves as an elegant accessory suitable for various occasions.

Construction Method

Shattered Stars is worked top down, a popular construction technique in shawl knitting that allows knitters to start from the top point and gradually increase stitches to build the semi-circular shape. This top-down approach provides flexibility in the finished size, as knitters can choose to end the pattern at their preferred depth. The top-down method also allows for easier adjustments based on available yardage and personal preferences.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric that serves as the perfect canvas for the diamond motif design. The diamond pattern is created through strategic increases and decreases that form the geometric shapes central to the shawl's aesthetic. The pattern incorporates lace-like elements through these stitch manipulations, creating visual interest while maintaining the elegance of the semi-circular silhouette.

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn: 385 meters (420 yards) of Eden Cottage Yarns Titus 4ply, a luxurious blend of 70% Merino wool and 30% silk, with a yardage of 437 yards per 100 grams
  • Needles: 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles, 61 cm (24 inches) in length
  • Additional Supplies: 20 stitch markers (optional), yarn needle for finishing, and blocking mat with pins

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 35 rows in 10 cm (4 inches) when working Stockinette stitch, measured over the first 57 long rows of the pattern after blocking. The finished dimensions are 120 cm long by 46 cm deep (47.5 inches by 18 inches) after blocking. It is important to note that gauge is not essential for this project, though differences in gauge will affect both the final size of the shawl and the amount of yarn required. Knitters working at a different gauge should be prepared to adjust their yardage expectations accordingly.

Difficulty Level

Shattered Stars is classified as an advanced knitting project, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with complex stitch patterns, shaping techniques, and the precision required for top-down construction. The combination of diamond motif work and semi-circular shaping requires attention to detail and familiarity with intermediate to advanced knitting concepts.
