Product Description
Oh this hat is just precious, and the trim makes this one so special. This listing is for the pattern only and is part of a larger pattern that I sell. Please click below to see the complete Ebook that includes a Vintage inspired cocoon and pillbox hat.
The design for this Cloche is easy, with some hand sewing required to attach the shabby rose trim.
I have added measurements throughout the pattern so that you can achieve the size you desire. There is a quick tutorial at the end of the pattern, explaining how to attach the shabby rose trim, that is easily found on a spool, at most craft stores.
Shabby Rose Cloche by Krissy's OTM Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Shabby Rose Cloche is a vintage-inspired crochet hat designed by Krissy's OTM Crochet. This beginner-friendly project creates a classic cloche-style hat that can be customized with decorative embellishments such as shabby roses, ribbon, buttons, lace, or elastic accents. The design captures the timeless aesthetic of vintage millinery while remaining accessible to newer crocheters.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction uses a straightforward alternating row method that builds the hat structure through consistent stitch patterns. The pattern incorporates joining techniques, as indicated by the use of slip stitch joins to connect rounds. Back post stitches are also featured in the stitch guide, offering texture variation for those ready to expand their technical skills.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH) – Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (SC) – A fundamental short stitch used across rows for structure and density
- Double Crochet (DC) – A taller stitch alternated with single crochet to create the main pattern texture
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – Listed in the stitch guide for pattern variations
- Back Post Half Double Crochet (BP HDC) – Provides textural interest by working around the post of previous stitches
- Slip Stitch (SLP ST) – Used for joining rounds and securing stitches
Materials and Tools
The Shabby Rose Cloche is worked using worsted weight yarn, classified as aran weight. The designer used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in Ivory for the sample, though any worsted weight yarn in your preferred color will work. A size J/10 (6.00mm) crochet hook is required for this project.
Beyond yarn and hook, the pattern calls for embellishment supplies including purchased ribbon, buttons, elastic, lace, or a spool of shabby roses (commonly available at major retailers). A sewing needle and matching thread are needed to attach these decorative elements to the finished hat base, allowing for personalization and customization of the final design.
Pattern Construction Details
The hat is constructed by working alternating rows of double crochet and single crochet stitches. The base chain is worked as a multiple of 2 stitches. Row 1 establishes the pattern by alternating double crochet and single crochet across the chain. Row 2 consists of single crochet stitches across. These two rows are then repeated until the piece measures approximately 4 inches by 4 inches, which equals 13 rows in height and 12 stitches across in width, creating a gauge swatch that ensures proper fit.
Important pattern notes include that the beginning chain does not count as a stitch, and when working in rounds, the first stitch is executed in the joining stitch. The pattern uses standard abbreviations and repeat notation, with asterisks indicating sections to be repeated a specified number of times.
