Product Description
When my son was little I loved to see him wearing a vest/tank top on warmer days. He looked so cute wearing one with his shorts and t shirts as well as over a shirt with chinos or jeans. Here's my simple, modern version for today's babies. Knitted in my favourite garter stitch it has a deep V neck and buttons on the shoulders for easy dressing. It's quick and easy to knit too which is a bonus.
Seth Baby Vest by Buzybee
Project Overview
The Seth Baby Vest is a knitted slipover garment designed for newborns and infants, available in five size options ranging from newborn through 1-2 years. This intermediate-level knitting project features a classic vest silhouette with button closures and finished edging details at the neckline and armholes.
What Is Being Made
This is a sleeveless baby vest, also known as a slipover, that pulls over the head and is secured with buttons. The vest is constructed with a fitted design that includes shaped armholes and a defined neckline. The garment is worked primarily in garter stitch, creating a textured, reversible fabric suitable for a baby's delicate skin.
Sizes and Fit

Materials Required
Yarn: DK weight yarn in quantities ranging from 100g for the smallest sizes (newborn, 0-3m, and 3-6m) to 150g for the 6-12 month size and 200g for the 1-2 year size.
Needles and Notions: 4mm needles, a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, and 2-3 buttons depending on the size being made.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Seth Baby Vest employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level project:
- Garter Stitch (gst): The primary stitch used throughout the vest, created by knitting every row. Garter stitch produces a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges and is an excellent choice for baby garments due to its durability and comfort.
- Decreasing: The pattern uses two decrease methods. K2tog (knit two stitches together) is used for standard decreases, while k2togtbl (knit two stitches together through the back of the stitches) is employed for decreases that create a different visual effect, typically used for shaping.
- Yarn Forward (yfd): A yarn over technique used to create decorative holes or eyelets in the fabric.
- Pick Up and Knit (PUK): Used when adding the neck and armhole edging, this technique involves picking up live stitches from the edges of the completed pieces and knitting them to create finished borders.
- Casting On and Casting Off: The vest begins with casting on stitches for the back piece and ends with casting off to secure the final stitches.
Construction Method
The Seth Baby Vest is constructed using a flat knitting method, worked in separate pieces that are later assembled. The back piece is cast on and worked in garter stitch, with strategic shaping created through decreases at the armholes. The pattern includes detailed row counts for each size, ensuring proper proportions. Neck and armhole edging is added after the main pieces are complete, providing a professional, finished appearance.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 44 rows in garter stitch to 10 centimeters when worked on 4mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished vest fits properly across all five size options.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with shaping techniques, multiple sizes, and finishing details. The straightforward garter stitch base makes it accessible, while the decreasing techniques and edging work provide appropriate challenge.
