Product Description

The Serriform scarf and shawlette is infinitely wearable. A serrated lace edging paired with the ever-lovely yet rustic garter stitch makes this pattern as enjoyable to knit as it is to wear. With two patterns in one, you can make either a long scarf or a deeper shawlette and, as it’s made from tip to tip, you can use up every last yard of your yarn. It’s also a great canvas on which variegated, hand-painted yarns can shine.

Notions: Tapestry needle. Skill level: Advanced beginner (increasing, decreasing, lace). Size/Finished measurements: Scarf: 72" from tip to tip, 9" deep at center. Shawlette: 62.5” from tip to tip, 12.5” deep at center. Measured after blocking.

Serriform Scarf & Shawlette by Shannon Squire

What Is Being Made

The Serriform pattern by Shannon Squire offers two elegant knitted designs: a generous scarf measuring 72 inches from tip to tip with a 9-inch depth at center, and a shawlette measuring 62.5 inches from tip to tip with a 12.5-inch depth at center. Both pieces are measured after blocking and feature a sophisticated construction suitable for knitters ready to expand their technical skills.

Techniques Used

This pattern incorporates several intermediate knitting techniques that elevate it beyond basic stockinette work. Knitters will practice increasing and decreasing methods to shape the pieces, along with lace construction to create openwork details characteristic of shawlette designs. The pattern requires working with stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points. Blocking is essential to achieve final measurements and to open up the lace elements, making this step an important part of the finishing process.

Stitches Used

The Serriform pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace techniques. Core stitches include:

  • Knit (k) – the basic stitch forming stockinette sections
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping and lace patterning
  • Knit into front and back (kfb) – an increase technique that adds stitches for expansion
  • Knit through the back loop (ktbl) – a twisted stitch variation for textural interest

These stitches combine to create the lace elements and shaping that define the scarf and shawlette silhouettes.

Materials

The Serriform pattern requires approximately 400 yards of fingering-weight yarn. Shannon Squire used madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the Burnished colorway for the original design, though any fingering-weight yarn of similar yardage and fiber content will work. A US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches or longer is required, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends during finishing.

Gauge and Difficulty

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. Notably, the pattern notes that gauge is not crucial for this design, making it forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge. The skill level is classified as advanced beginner, indicating that while basic knitting knowledge is assumed, knitters should be comfortable with increasing, decreasing, and lace techniques before beginning this project.
