Product Description
After many requests from discerning grown-up knitters, here is the comfy adult version of the popular Lincoln Baby Sweater. No buttons on the shoulder, though. I figure adults can usually get a sweater over their own heads. The split hem adds ease, the textured yoke patterns is a four-row repeat and there is enough mindless stockinette for movie night.
The body starts with a split hem in pattern stitch. Then it's joined and worked in the round to the armholes. After dividing for front and back, the yoke is worked flat in textured stitch. Sleeves are picked up and worked down, so no seams at all!
Semilla Melange is a lovely, lightweight, lofty GOTS certified yarn with gorgeous colors and plenty of yardage per skein.
CLARIFICATION on sleeve cap:
Row 1 (WS): Purl to last 2 sts of armhole (before stitches picked up on underarm), p2tog, turn.
8/22: I reworked the “divide for front and back” section wording to make it more clear.
Selby Adult Sweater by M.L. Egan
Design Overview
Selby is a grown-up adaptation of the Lincoln Baby Sweater, featuring a modified drop shoulder construction and a split hem design. This knitted pullover sweater is available in seven sizes, with finished chest circumferences ranging from 36 inches (91 cm) to 60 inches (152 cm), making it suitable for a wide range of body sizes. The design incorporates 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5 cm) of ease for comfortable wearing.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Selby employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level knitters. The sweater is constructed using circular needles for the body and sleeves, with the modified drop shoulder providing a relaxed, contemporary silhouette. The split hem detail adds visual interest and allows for styling flexibility. The construction method utilizes standard abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), knit two stitches together (K2tog), purl two stitches together (P2tog), slip stitch (Sl), slip-slip-knit decrease (SSK), and make one stitch using backward loop (M1).
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern uses stockinette stitch as the primary stitch throughout the garment, as indicated by the gauge specification. Stockinette stitch—created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side—produces the classic smooth, V-textured fabric characteristic of traditional sweaters. Decreases such as K2tog, P2tog, and SSK are employed for shaping at the armholes and neckline, while M1 increases using the backward loop method add stitches where needed for sleeve cap shaping.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Selby calls for BC Yarn Semilla Melange, a 100% GOTS certified organic wool yarn. This yarn provides 191 yards (175 meters) per 50-gram skein and is classified as DK to sport weight, making it ideal for garments with good drape and structure. The project requires 7 to 12 skeins depending on the chosen size, allowing knitters to work with a natural, breathable fiber.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 32-inch (80 cm) and 16-inch (40 cm) lengths for working the body and neckband respectively. A set of double-pointed needles in the same size accommodates sleeve construction. Additional notions include a stitch holder or waste yarn for holding stitches, a blunt tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit; knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to match this gauge before beginning the project. Seven size options—ranging from 36 inches to 60 inches in finished chest circumference—accommodate different body measurements, with the 3 to 5 inches of designed ease providing comfortable movement.
Skill Level
Selby is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stockinette stitch, basic shaping techniques, and clear pattern structure provide an excellent introduction to sweater knitting without overwhelming complexity.
