Product Description
Seagrass is an asymmetric wrap composed of rows of shell stitches bracketed by post stitches to create a bold, textured fabric with pleasing lines.
A six-row repeat keeps things fairly simple . You can pretty much keep going until you use up your yarn.
This is perfect for a special skein of fingering weight yarn.
The pattern is written in both UK and US terms (there are two versions) and includes photographs and a hand-drawn chart.
The sample is made with Green Elephant Yarn Yak Sock, (437 yards/400 meters), 100g, 70% merino, 20% yak, 10% nylon (in colourway Zest) but you can make it in any of the recommended yarns or your favourite fingering weight yarn.
Seagrass Asymmetric Wrap by Jan Power
What Is Being Made
Seagrass is an asymmetric wrap designed as a special project for showcasing a treasured skein of fingering weight yarn. The finished wrap measures 47 inches (119 cm) in wingspan, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The asymmetric construction creates flowing, organic lines that complement the textured stitch pattern.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This design employs a structured yet accessible approach to texture work. The wrap is constructed using rows of shell stitches that are bracketed by post stitches, creating a bold, dimensional fabric with excellent drape. The use of front post trebles and back post double crochets adds textural interest while maintaining a relatively straightforward construction method. A six-row repeat pattern keeps the project manageable for crocheters at the beginner level, allowing crafters to establish rhythm and confidence as they work through the piece.
Stitches Used
- Shell stitch: Composed of (2 trebles, chain 1, 2 trebles) worked into a stitch or chain space, creating the signature scalloped texture
- Shell in Shell: A variation where a shell is worked into the chain space of a previous shell, building dimensional layers
- Front post treble (fptr): Post stitches that work around the post of previous stitches to create raised, textured lines
- Back post double crochet (bpdc): Post stitches worked from behind to add structural definition
- Double crochet (dc): Standard stitch used throughout the pattern
- Treble (tr): Taller stitch used within shell formations
- Chain (ch): Foundation and spacing element throughout the design
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The sample is worked in Green Elephant Yarn Yak Sock in the colorway Zest. This yarn is a premium blend combining 70% merino wool, 20% yak fiber, and 10% nylon, totaling 437 yards (400 meters) per 100-gram skein. The fingering weight classification (4-ply) provides excellent stitch definition while maintaining the drape necessary for an asymmetric wrap. One skein is sufficient to complete the project.
Tools and Gauge
The pattern calls for a 5.00 mm crochet hook, or whichever hook size is needed to achieve the specified gauge. The target gauge is 3 pattern repeats (consisting of front post treble and shell) measuring 4¼ inches (11 cm) in width. Achieving proper gauge ensures the wrap reaches its intended wingspan of 47 inches and drapes as designed.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, Seagrass is accessible to crocheters new to post stitches and shell work. The six-row repeat provides a manageable learning curve, and the straightforward stitch sequence allows crafters to build confidence with each repeat while creating a visually striking finished piece.
