Product Description
A shrug knitted in two pieces for the sleeves, grafted and then picked up for the lace border around the edge.
Scoresby Bolero Shrug by Michelle Hazell
What is Being Made
The Scoresby is an advanced knitted bolero shrug designed to fit a wingspan of 52 inches, with finished measurements of 60 inches across the wingspan and 16 inches sleeve circumference. This elegant garment is constructed as a two-piece project that combines tailored sleeve shaping with delicate lace detailing, creating a sophisticated layering piece suitable for both casual and dressy occasions.
Construction Technique
The Scoresby employs a distinctive construction method that begins with two separate sleeves worked from the cuff edges upward. These sleeve pieces are then grafted together along the centre back seam, creating a unified garment body. Once the sleeves are joined and seamed, stitches are picked up around the body perimeter to establish the collar section. This pick-up method allows for seamless integration between the sleeve body and the neckline. The garment is completed with the application of a lacy edging that frames the collar, adding a refined finishing touch.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Scoresby incorporates three distinct stitch patterns, each with specific gauge requirements:
- Main Lace Pattern: Worked at approximately 14 stitches and 19 rows per 4 inches, this pattern forms the primary fabric of the sleeves and body. The Main Lace Pattern is constructed using 8-stitch repeats, which can be modified to adjust sleeve circumference.
- 3x3 Rib: The ribbed collar section is worked at approximately 18 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches, providing elasticity and structure to the neckline.
- Edging Lace Pattern: Applied as the final detail, this lace pattern is worked at approximately 24 stitches and 21 rows per 4 inches, creating a delicate border that frames the collar opening.
Materials and Tools
The Scoresby is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, with the original design example knitted in a yarn no longer in production. Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift (100% Wool; 115 yards/105 meters per 25-gram skein) is recommended as a suitable substitute, requiring 6 balls for completion. The project requires one set of US #4/6mm straight needles for the sleeve cuffs and initial construction, one 40-inch US #7/4.5mm circular needle for the collar and edging work, stitch holders for managing active stitches, stitch markers for pattern alignment, and a tapestry needle for grafting, seaming, and weaving in ends.
Customization Options
The Scoresby pattern provides flexibility for personalizing the finished garment. Sleeve circumference can be varied by altering the number of 8-stitch repeats worked in the Main Lace Pattern, allowing knitters to adjust the fit to their preferences. Wingspan length can similarly be adjusted through pattern modifications, enabling the creation of a bolero that suits individual proportions and styling preferences.
Skill Level
Rated as an advanced knitting project, the Scoresby requires proficiency with lace knitting techniques, gauge management across multiple stitch patterns, grafting methods for joining pieces, and the ability to pick up stitches and work seamlessly between different sections. This pattern is best suited for experienced knitters comfortable with complex stitch patterns and garment construction techniques.
