Scoodie Scarf Crochet Pattern – Schachenmayr Soraya S9369

This free downloadable crochet pattern (S9369) from Schachenmayr guides you through creating a scoodie — a clever combination of a cozy oversized scarf and an attached hood. The finished piece measures approximately 180 cm long and 46 cm high, making it a generously sized, functional accessory perfect for cold-weather wear. Rated as an intermediate difficulty crochet project, this design is ideal for crafters who are comfortable working from crochet charts and managing multiple stitch patterns within a single project.

What Is a Scoodie?

A scoodie is a hybrid accessory that combines a traditional scarf with a hood crocheted directly onto it. The long scarf wraps around the neck and shoulders for warmth, while the hood provides additional coverage for the head. This style has become increasingly popular as a stylish and practical alternative to a standard hat-and-scarf combination. The construction method used in this pattern — crocheting the hood directly onto the body of the finished scarf — results in a seamlessly integrated design.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr Soraya in Mineral, colour 7904 — 350 g total. Soraya is a chunky weight yarn, delivering the substantial warmth and texture that makes this scoodie so effective as a winter accessory.
  • Crochet Hook: 5 mm
  • Tapestry/Wool Needle: 1 wool embroidery needle for finishing seams

Tension / Gauge

Achieving the correct tension is important for this pattern, as two different stitch patterns are used across the scarf and hood sections, each with their own gauge:

  • Crochet Pattern 1 (Scarf): 15 stitches and 7.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm
  • Crochet Pattern 2 (Hood): 13.5 stitches and 9 rows = 10 x 10 cm

Techniques and Construction

Scarf Section

The scarf is worked first, constructed using Crochet Pattern 1 as shown in the accompanying crochet chart. You begin by casting on 31 + 3 chain stitches, with the first double crochet (treble in UK terms) worked into the 6th chain from the hook. The pattern is worked in back-and-forth rows, following the chart which shows the full width of the scarf. Rows 1–4 are worked once, after which rows 3 and 4 are repeated continuously until the scarf reaches 180 cm in length (135 rows total).

Hood Section

Once the scarf is complete, the hood is crocheted directly onto it — a technique that integrates the two pieces without the need for sewing them together separately. The scarf is laid flat horizontally, and a point 40 cm (30 rows) from the right edge is measured as the starting point for the hood.

The hood is worked using Crochet Pattern 2, also in back-and-forth rows. In the first row of the hood, slip stitches and single crochets (US terminology) are worked into the edge double crochets of the scarf rows to establish the base of the hood. Specifically, 2 single crochets are worked into each of the first 4 edge double crochets of the scarf, then 1 single crochet into the next, building up a total of 69 single crochets across 38 edge double crochets of the scarf. Rows 2 through 27 of the hood are then worked according to Crochet Pattern 2.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch — used for the foundation chain and within stitch patterns
  • Slip stitch (Kettmasche) — used at the beginning of the border edging
  • Single crochet / slip stitch (feste Maschen) — used extensively in the hood construction and edging
  • Double croc
