Product Description

Scarlet Berry is a V-shaped shawl made of crochet motifs, using a join-as-you-go method which eliminates having to sew all the motifs together.

Variations of the fundamental hexagon motif are used in this design to shape the shawl without breaking the spectacular geometric pattern.

The size of the shawl can be adjusted to fit individual preferences by adding extra or crocheting fewer motif rows. There are 65 motifs in the suggested layout: 33 hexagon motifs and 32 partial motifs.

The pattern includes two additional layouts: a stole (rectangular shape) and a shawlette (kerchief shape).

Scarlet Berry Crochet Shawl by Lena Fedotova

What Is Being Made

Scarlet Berry is a V-shaped crochet shawl composed of modular motifs joined together using the join-as-you-go technique. This construction method allows motifs to be connected during the crocheting process, eliminating the need for separate seaming steps after completion. The design features variations of a fundamental hexagon motif that work together to create a cohesive geometric pattern without disrupting the visual flow of the shawlette. The pattern offers flexibility in sizing and includes alternative layouts: the primary V-shaped shawl configuration, a rectangular stole version, and a kerchief-shaped shawlette option, allowing crafters to customize the finished garment to their preferences.

Techniques Used

The primary construction technique employed in Scarlet Berry is the join-as-you-go method, which streamlines the assembly process by connecting motifs with slip stitches as each new motif is crocheted rather than waiting until all pieces are complete. This approach reduces finishing time and creates secure, integrated seams throughout the garment. The modular design uses hexagon motif variations as the foundational building blocks, allowing the shawl to expand in size while maintaining consistent geometric patterning. The suggested layout incorporates 65 total motifs: 33 complete hexagon motifs and 32 partial motifs positioned to create the characteristic V-shape of the finished shawl. Crafters can adjust the overall dimensions by adding extra motif rows or reducing the number of rows crocheted, making this design adaptable to individual sizing preferences.

Stitches Used

Scarlet Berry utilizes fundamental crochet stitches to construct its motifs and overall structure. The pattern documentation references the following abbreviations and stitch elements:

  • ch – chain stitches, the foundation of crochet construction
  • ch-sp – chain spaces, the gaps created between stitches that form decorative openings
  • dc – double crochet, a mid-height stitch that provides structure and drape
  • cl – cluster stitches, defined as (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), creating textured, dimensional elements within the motifs

These stitches combine to create the lacy, open geometric patterns characteristic of the design while maintaining the structural integrity needed for a wearable shawl.

Materials

Yarn: Scrumptious Lace by Fyberspates in the Cherry colorway. This yarn is composed of 45% silk and 55% merino wool, offering a luxurious blend that provides both sheen and warmth. The yardage is 1093 yards (1000 meters) per 100-gram skein, and the pattern requires two skeins to complete the suggested shawl layout, totaling approximately 2186 yards of yarn.

Hook: US B (2.25mm) crochet hook, a small hook size appropriate for lace-weight yarn that creates the delicate, open fabric characteristic of this design.

Finishing Tools: A yarn needle is needed to weave in and secure yarn ends throughout the project.

Difficulty Level

Scarlet Berry is rated as an intermediate crochet project. While the individual stitches are fundamental crochet techniques, the join-as-you-go construction method and the coordination of multiple motifs require familiarity with crochet basics and the ability to work with lace-weight yarn, which demands attention to tension and stitch definition. Crafters comfortable with standard crochet projects and ready to expand their skills will find this design accessible and rewarding.
