Product Description
A lovely Scandinavian inspired cosy long line chunky sweater with a split length hem. The colourwork patterning only ever uses 2 colours in any 1 row and is simple to do. The yoke is worked in stocking stitch in 1 shade only, avoiding having to break into the colourwork while shaping the neck and shoulders. A lovely soft funnel finishes the yoke prefectly.
Please note, this pattern contains copies of my original, very hand drawn charts

Scandinavian Inspired Split Hem Colourwork Sweater by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
This is an advanced-level knitted sweater featuring Scandinavian-inspired colourwork design. The garment includes a distinctive split hem detail and is constructed in chunky yarn for a bold, textured finish. The sweater is available in six sizes, ranging from bust measurements of 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 127-132 cm (50-52 inches), making it suitable for a wide range of body types.
Techniques Used
Colourwork knitting is the primary decorative technique employed in this design, allowing for intricate patterned details inspired by traditional Scandinavian textile design. The split hem construction adds a contemporary design element that creates visual interest at the garment's lower edge. This advanced project requires proficiency in managing multiple yarn colours simultaneously and maintaining consistent tension throughout the work.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked across the garment pieces. The tension requirement is 19 stitches and 20 rows to 10 centimetres (4 inches), which is typical for chunky yarn construction and helps achieve the proper fabric density and drape. The sweater is constructed using stitch holders to manage stitches during assembly, indicating a multi-piece construction method where individual components (front, back, and sleeves) are knitted separately before being joined together.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for King Cole Indulge Chunky yarn, which provides 230 metres (251 yards) per 100-gram ball. Three coordinating shades are used throughout the design:
- Shade A: Quartz (2451) – the primary colour, requiring 4 to 5 balls depending on size
- Shade B: Granite (2458) – a secondary colour, requiring 2 to 4 balls depending on size
- Shade C: Matador (2456) – an accent colour, requiring 1 to 2 balls depending on size
The colour palette combines neutral and warm tones, creating a sophisticated Scandinavian aesthetic. Total yarn requirements range from approximately 700 grams for smaller sizes to 1000 grams for the largest size.
Needles and Tools
The project requires three pairs of knitting needles in graduated sizes: 5 mm (UK 6, US 8), 5.5 mm (UK 5, US 9), and 6 mm (UK 4, US 10). The use of multiple needle sizes allows for proper tension control in different sections of the garment, with smaller needles typically used for ribbed edges and larger needles for the main body. Additionally, two stitch holders are needed to temporarily secure stitches during construction and assembly.
Garment Dimensions
The finished sweater features an actual bust measurement ranging from 98 cm (38½ inches) to 147 cm (58 inches) across the six size options, providing positive ease for comfortable wearing. The length at the centre back, excluding the neckband, measures between 70 and 72 centimetres (27½ to 28½ inches), creating a standard pullover length. Sleeve length is consistent across all sizes at 44 centimetres (17½ inches), ensuring proportional fit regardless of overall garment size.
Skill Level and Pattern Complexity
Classified as an advanced knitting project, this sweater is designed for experienced knitters who are comfortable with colourwork techniques, managing multiple yarn colours, and executing more complex pattern instructions. The combination of colourwork patterning and the split hem detail requires strong foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow detailed pattern charts and written instructions.
