What you'll need

Product Description

The archangel colorway in Malabrigo Silky Merino is kind of ever changing. The colors meld together in shades of pinks and yellows and plums. It's impossible to photograph, but gorgeous to wear. This shawl was designed specifically for the colorway. The lace is worked from the bottom up, with a larger cast-on number diminishing to columns of stockinette in the body of the shawl to show off all the lovely blending colors.

This pattern is provided in written and charted instructions. Stitch markers are recommended to help keep track of the edge and center stitches.

Important Note: I had less than ten yards remaining after working the shawl, so you might want to have a 4th skein available to you just in case!

A suggested substitute yarn is shown below.

Sariel Shawl by Corrina Ferguson

Project Overview

Sariel is a bottom-up knit shawl designed by independent designer Corrina Ferguson. This intermediate-level project creates a generous triangular wrap that transforms dramatically through blocking. The unblocked shawl measures 52 inches wide by 26 inches deep, expanding to an impressive 72 inches wide by 34 inches deep after blocking, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Construction Method and Techniques

The shawl is worked from the bottom edge upward using a structured charted approach. The construction employs strategic use of stitch markers to track pattern repeats and maintain shaping throughout the project. The design utilizes four distinct charts that are worked in sequence, combining lace elements with stockinette sections to create visual interest and drape.

Stitch Patterns and Charts

  • Chart A: A 14-row lace chart worked once for the bottom border, establishing the foundation with 267 stitches remaining after completion
  • Chart B: A 16-row lace chart worked once, reducing stitch count to 235 stitches and establishing marker positions for subsequent sections
  • Chart C: A repeating stockinette column chart worked four times, creating the main body of the shawl with consistent texture
  • Chart D: A final chart worked once to complete the top edge and finish the shawl

Yarn and Materials

This project requires 3 skeins of Malabrigo Silky Merino yarn in the DK weight category, with each skein containing 50 grams and 150 yards. The shawl uses nearly all available yardage, with fewer than 10 yards remaining after completion. Designers recommend having an extra skein available as a backup to ensure sufficient yardage for completion. The project calls for US 8 (5.0 mm) needles, 4 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge and Specifications

The gauge for this project is 20 stitches and 30 rows to 4 inches measured in unblocked stockinette stitch. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions and ensuring proper yarn yardage distribution throughout the shawl.

Stitch Marker Placement

Stitch markers play a crucial role in tracking the shawl's structure. Initial marker placement divides the work into sections: 15 stitches from each end and a marked center section of 25 stitches. After completing Chart B, markers are repositioned to 13 stitches from each end while maintaining the 25-stitch center marking. This strategic marker placement helps knitters maintain pattern accuracy and shaping throughout the construction process.

Blocking and Finishing

The dramatic difference between unblocked and blocked measurements demonstrates the importance of blocking for this design. Blocking opens up the lace elements and allows the shawl to reach its full intended dimensions, transforming a 52-inch-wide piece into a 72-inch-wide accessory. This expansion showcases the lace patterning and creates the elegant drape characteristic of the finished shawl.
