Product Description

Santa Slouch features a double-thick ribbed brim (the two layers are joined by knitting stitches together--no sewing required!). A pompom tutorial with pictures is included in the pattern.

The hat is written for only one size; however, the double ribbing is extremely stretchy, so the hat will easily fit heads from 18”-26” in circumference.

Pattern uses approximately 120-150 yds of MC and 30-50 yds of CC.

Santa Slouch Knit Hat by Triona Murphy

What is Being Made

The Santa Slouch is a festive knit hat designed by Triona Murphy that combines a stretchy folded brim with a slouchy crown. This one-size-fits-all hat comfortably accommodates head circumferences ranging from 18 to 26 inches (46 to 66 centimeters), making it suitable for a wide range of wearers. The design features a two-color construction using a bright red main color paired with an aran contrasting color, creating a classic holiday aesthetic.

Techniques Used

The Santa Slouch employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The construction begins with a cast-on for the brim, which is then worked in stockinette stitch before being folded to create the finished edge. The pattern utilizes circular knitting methods, transitioning from circular needles to double-pointed needles as the crown decreases. The design includes a joining round where live stitches are worked together, which can be executed using either a standard cast-on or an optional provisional cast-on method for a more refined finish. The hat is completed with a hand-made pompom constructed from cardboard and yarn.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k): The primary stitch forming the stockinette stitch base
  • Purl (p): Used in combination with knit stitches as needed in the pattern
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the crown
  • Cast on (CO): The foundation method for beginning the brim
  • Bind off (BO): The finishing technique for securing the final stitches

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Patons Classic Wool, a 100% wool yarn available in 210-yard (192-meter) skeins per 100 grams. One skein each of Bright Red (main color) and Aran (contrasting color) are required for completion.

Needles and Notions: US #7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring 16 or 20 inches in length are used for the initial brim and body work. One set of US #7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles is needed for the crown decreases. Additional notions include a stitch marker for tracking pattern rounds, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and thin cardboard with sharp scissors for constructing the decorative pompom.

Gauge: The pattern is worked to a gauge of 19 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch using US #7 (4.5mm) needles. Checking gauge and adjusting needle size as needed is recommended to achieve proper fit and fabric drape.
