What Is Being Made

Salaka socks are a fingering weight knit sock design featuring a stylised fish tail motif inspired by herring, the valuable commodity of the North and Baltic Seas. The socks combine textured cuffs with delicate, interlocking cables that create a decorative fish tail pattern down the leg. This downloadable knitting pattern is suitable for beginners and comes in three sizes to fit foot circumferences of approximately 7.5, 8.5, or 9.5 inches (19, 21.5, or 24 cm).

Techniques Used

The Salaka sock pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. Materials and Gauge

The Salaka sock pattern requires 300 to 437 yards (274.5 to 400 metres) of fingering weight yarn, depending on the size selected. The sample shown was knitted in Rusty Ferret Doll 4 Ply yarn in the "The Dark Below" colourway. Knitters will need 2.25 mm (US 1) circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs), along with three stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 8 stitches by 12 rows equalling 1 inch (2.5 cm) in stocking stitch in the round. The finished leg length from cuff to the base of the heel flap measures approximately 9.5 inches (24 cm), though this dimension can be customised by adjusting the number of pattern repeats, with the cable pattern section comprising 18 rounds (approximately 1.5 inches or 4 cm) per repeat.
