Product Description

Saint Veronica, whose feast day is July 12, is the name given by the Church to the woman who wiped Jesus’ face in an act of compassion as He walked, carrying His cross, to Calvary. Rather than try to create a True Icon in knitting, as her name means, this cowl uses symbolism from that event. Slipped stitches create a crown of thorns on a simple background. Perfect for meditative knitting and gifts, it can also be worked quickly.

Saint Veronica Cowl by Ranée Mueller

What is Being Made

The Saint Veronica is a knitted cowl designed by independent designer Ranée Mueller. This project creates a circular neckwear piece inspired by the biblical story of Saint Veronica, whose feast day is celebrated on July 12. Rather than attempting a traditional icon representation, the cowl uses symbolic knitting techniques to evoke the spiritual narrative of compassion and sacrifice associated with this saint.

Design Inspiration and Symbolism

The Saint Veronica cowl draws its design concept from the historical account of the woman who wiped Jesus' face during His journey to Calvary. The pattern translates this act of compassion into a wearable textile through deliberate stitch placement and texture. The cowl is particularly suited for meditative knitting, making it an ideal project for crafters seeking a contemplative making experience while producing a meaningful gift.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-level knitting project employs slipped stitches as its primary decorative technique. Slipped stitches create a distinctive visual motif across the cowl that represents a crown of thorns, establishing the symbolic connection to the Saint Veronica narrative. The pattern combines these slipped stitches against a simple background, allowing the textural detail to stand out clearly. The cowl is worked in the round, a fundamental circular knitting technique that creates a seamless tubular fabric ideal for neck wear.

Yarn and Materials

The Saint Veronica cowl requires approximately 115 yards (105 meters) of DK weight yarn, classified as light worsted weight. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Malabrigo Rios, a premium yarn composed of 100% Superwash Merino fiber. Each skein of Malabrigo Rios provides 210 yards (192 meters) and weighs 3.53 ounces (100 grams), meaning one skein contains sufficient yardage to complete this project with yarn remaining. The Superwash Merino fiber offers durability, softness, and easy care properties suitable for a cowl worn close to the face and neck.

Needles and Tools

Crafters should use US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles in their preferred style for knitting in the round. Options include circular needles, double-pointed needles, or magic loop method, allowing flexibility based on individual preference and experience level. The pattern recommends including a stitch marker, though it is noted as optional. A stitch marker helps track the beginning of each round, particularly useful for maintaining pattern accuracy when working slipped stitches.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 32 rounds, measured over stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating a cowl with the intended finished dimensions and drape. Crafters should knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project and adjust needle size as needed to match the specified gauge.

Project Characteristics

The Saint Veronica is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to newer knitters while remaining engaging for experienced crafters. Despite its beginner designation, the pattern can be worked quickly, offering the satisfaction of completing a finished, wearable garment in a reasonable timeframe. The combination of meditative slipped-stitch work and straightforward in-the-round construction makes this cowl suitable for both personal use and gift-giving.
