Saffron 8ply Striped Slipper Socks by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Saffron pattern creates a pair of cozy slipper-socks designed to fit snugly on the foot while remaining soft and comfortable for extended wear. These socks feature a fitted construction that works equally well as indoor slippers or casual socks. The pattern is available in three sizes: Small (to fit 23cm/9 inch foot), Medium (to fit 25cm/10 inch foot), and Large (to fit 27cm/10.5 inch foot).
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Saffron slipper-socks employ several distinct knitting techniques to create both structure and comfort. The cuff begins with a snug fitting rib that provides elasticity and helps the socks stay in place on the foot. The main foot section is worked in stocking stitch stripes, which creates a smooth, refined fabric ideal for wearing against the skin. The sole is constructed using garter stitch, a textured stitch that provides durability and grip underfoot, making these slipper-socks practical for indoor wear.
While the pattern is designed to showcase three coordinating colours—aqua (C1), purple (C2), and yellow (C3)—knitters have the flexibility to work the entire design in a single colour if preferred. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various yarn stash options and personal preferences.
Stitches Used
- Rib stitch – for the fitted cuff
- Stocking stitch – for the striped foot section
- Garter stitch – for the sole
Materials Required
The Saffron pattern calls for Lincraft DK 8ply yarn at a yardage of 266 metres per 100g ball. Knitters will need one 100g ball each of three colours (aqua, purple, and yellow), though quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn type. The pattern specifies 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) and a wool needle for sewing seams.
Tension and Difficulty
The pattern is rated as Easy in difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with intermediate experience. The required tension is 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit, particularly in the foot section where sizing matters for comfort.
